Hometown Heroes of Greater New Bedford #16: Captain Steven Alves

“My son Steven Alves is my hometown hero. Steve was born in New Bedford and was a pillar of the community.

He played baseball and football for the South End Broncos. He won the speech academy award at 11-years old beating 2 college freshmen and 3 seniors from New Bedford High School. He was also the president of the New Bedford Police Junior Police Academy.

He went to New Bedford Vocational High School majoring in HVAC and also played football, baseball, track, and hockey. He enlisted in the Marines right out of high school and served 4 years, including 1 tour in Afghanistan.

He honored his 4-year commitment and left to go to college. He graduated from Southern New Hampshire University and went back into the Marine Corp and graduated from OCS school as a Marine Aviator. He is a Captain now stationed in San Diego, Camp Pendleton. He flies the Marine Viper/Cobra and going on his 2nd deployment to Japan in April.
