Flood Watch issued for portions of Massachusetts and Rhode Island

The National Weather Service in Taunton has issued a Flood Watch for portions of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, including the following areas, in Massachusetts, Bristol, Central and Southeast Middlesex, Essex, Norfolk, Plymouth, Southern Worcester, and Suffolk. In Rhode Island, Bristol, Kent, Newport, Providence, and Washington.

* From 2 PM EDT this afternoon through 8 AM EDT Saturday morning

* Low pressure system will pass west of New England tonight. This will spread widespread rain across the region with locally heavy downpours and widely scattered thunderstorms. The heaviest rain will fall from mid afternoon through tonight.

* Widespread 1 to 2 inch rain amounts are expected. Rainfall may reach 2 to 3 inches in Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

* There is potential for moderate urban and poor drainage flooding. Rainfall rates up to 1 inch per hour are possible in downpours as well as any thunderstorms.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
