City man arrested for trafficking in heroin

A 31-year-old New Bedford man was arrested Tuesday with trafficking in heroin and other charges after police found 179 grams of heroin, with a street value of about $18,000, along with a firearm and cash, at his home.

Ryan Cabral, 31, of New Bedford was charged with trafficking in heroin (over 100 grams); possession of a class A drug (heroin) with intent to distribute (subsequent offense); possession of a firearm without a license; unlawful possession of ammunition; possession of a large capacity firearm and unlawful possession of a large capacity feeding device (also known as a magazine.)

Police executed a search warrant of Cabral’s home at approximately 10:30 pm Tuesday night and found a canister in his backyard which contained a loaded .22 caliber firearm with a bullet in the chamber and five in the magazine, four plastic bags of heroin weighed in at 179 grams.

A further search of the home yielded two high-capacity magazines, 21 .45 caliber ammunition, 13 Remington .223 ammunition, digital scales, cutting agents, packaging material, a press and $25,661 in cash.

Cabral does not possess a license to carry.

He was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Third District Court.
