Grupo Flor de Izote to present free concert, Thursday, August 15

The 2013 Thursdays in the Park Concert Series continues its weekly summer series with a performance of Central American music and dance by Grupo Flor de Izote. A group of Mayan marimba players will also perform. The free concert takes place Thursday, August 15 from 6:30-7:15 in the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park garden (33 William Street). In the event of inclement weather, the performance will be moved indoors. The Thursday Evenings in the Park concerts take place each week during the summer, with the last concert taking place on August 29.

The event will offer Central American music and dance featuring dancers and musicians from El Salvador and Guatemala. Grupo Flor de Izote is comprised of Salvadorans who live in New Bedford and are members of the Fundacion Romero, an organization dedicated to the memory of Archbishop Oscar Romero. A spokesperson for the group explained, “The Izote flower is the national flower of El Salvador, the goal of our group is to maintain and promote the cultural values of El Salvador by involving youth in different events and activities. Dance reminds us that despite our troubles we can find and spread joy to others and keep the cultural roots of our ancestors alive.”
