At 11:00 a.m. tomorrow morning in front of the New Bedford Main Library on Pleasant Street, Mayor Jon Mitchell will join with members of the community to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the original dedication of the “Whaleman Statue.”

The iconic bronze statue was sculpted by Bela Lyon Pratt, commissioned by William W. Crapo, and dedicated by Mayor Charles S. Ashley on June 20, 1913. The Whaleman Statue serves as a proud tribute to the whalers who made New Bedford the world’s most famous whaling port in the nineteenth century.

In addition, the concept plan for the New Bedford Fishermens Tribute Plaza will be presented during the centennial program. This tribute will honor the generations of New Bedford fishermen and their families whose work and support have made New Bedford the number one fishing port in America.
