Hundreds of local families will have a hearty Thanksgiving meal, thanks in part to $5,000 in donations from offshore wind developer Bay State Wind.

Bay State Wind gave $2,500 to the United Way of Greater New Bedford, whose Hunger Heroes Project is distributing 800 turkeys and 1,000 meals for Thanksgiving with the assistance of more than 300 volunteers through about 15 food pantries and agencies in the region.

Bay State Wind also gave $2,500 to the Immigrant’s Assistance Center of New Bedford, which provides an array of services to more than 7,000 immigrants annually.

“There’s just so much need,” said Helena DaSilva-Hughes, the executive director of the Immigrant’s Assistance Center.

Bay State Wind is a joint venture of Denmark energy company Orsted, formerly DONG Energy, and Eversource, New England’s largest electricity and natural gas provider. With offices in the city, Bay State Wind is bidding to develop the nation’s first industrial-scale offshore wind farm south of Martha’s Vineyard.

“Bay State Wind will be an important part of New Bedford for many years,” said Lauren Burm, spokeswoman for Orsted. “We look forward to doing our part to help this region become an even better place to live, work and raise a family.”

Eversource spokesman Dennis Galvam noted that his company has long played an important role in aiding the community.

“Helping our neighbors and our community is central to the Eversource mission,” said Galvam.
