The crash remains under investigation

This morning at approximately 10:53 a.m., troopers from the State Police Barracks in Foxboro responded to a rollover crash on the ramp from Route 495 northbound to Route 140 (Exit 12) in Mansfield.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Paul Dockrey indicates the drivers of a 2007 Chevrolet 2500 pickup and a 2007 Ford Ranger pickup became involved in a “road rage”-type incident as they traveled on Route 495 northbound. Evidence indicates that at one point the operator of the Ford Ranger, MICHAEL HINDS, 67, of Norton, made intentional contact with the other vehicle. Following that collision, both vehicles took the Exit 12 ramp and a second collision occurred between the two vehicles, causing the Chevrolet to rollover on the ramp. HINDS fled the scene.

The operator of the Chevrolet, an adult male, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, also an adult male, was transported via medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of serious injuries and remains in critical condition.

HINDS was located at his residence and placed under arrest. He was transported to the State Police Barracks in Foxboro where he is being held on $200,000 bail. He will be arraigned in Attleboro District Court tomorrow morning.

HINDS was charged with the following offenses:

1. Motor Vehicle Homicide While Under the Influence of Liquor;
2. Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon (Motor Vehicle);
3. Operating Under the Influence of Liquor, 2nd Offense;
4. Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving a Death;
5. Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Serious Injury;
6. Operating to Endanger; and
7. Possession of Open Container of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation by the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, State Police Crime Scene Services Section and detectives assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. The Exit 12 ramp remains closed.
