The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center welcomes Aquila Theatre’s captivating production of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes on Sunday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m. One hundred and twenty five years after his debut, Sherlock Holmes remains the definitive and most famous detective in world literature. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s rich characters come to life in this unique production that re-envisions the legendary sleuth as a female detective; one who skillfully maneuvers the twisted web of London’s most intriguing cases with her split second deductions. The Aquila Theatre brings its energetic physical style to this new adaptation for the theater. With actors drawn from the top British and American stages, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a thrilling and memorable ride, and Director Desiree Sanchez’s vision for the production is both simultaneously old and new. Her faithful rendition of three of Doyle’s original stories is combined with modern staging that incorporates elements of film noir and laugh-out-loud physical comedy. Of the decision to cast Sherlock as a female, D.C. Metro Theater Arts says, “…the choice to cast Loren O’Dair as the Sleuth herself is the boldest and most modernizing choice. Regardless of her gender O’Dair is a powerhouse presence on stage who conveys, in equal parts, the genius and condescension that make Sherlock Holmes such a complex and endearing character.”
Founded by in 1991 and based in New York City, Aquila Theatre is now one the foremost producer of touring classical theater in the United States with an international reach, visiting up to 60 American cities a year and traveling abroad with a program of two plays, workshops and educational programming. The company is regularly funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, The National Endowment for the Humanities, and has performed at the White House on two separate occasions. Aquila has also received a Chairman’s Special Award from the National Endowment for the Humanities for its innovative theater programming.
