9th Annual Fishermens’ Tribute Fund 5K Road Race/Walk will take place at Fort Taber on Sunday, July 20th 2014 at 9:00AM.

Since 2004 meetings have been held to create a monument to honor fishermen lost at sea, as well as those who work hard everyday, and those that will follow the same path in the future. All of which help make New Bedford the #1 port in the country, and significantly boost the local economy.

Fishermens’ Tribute monument with sculptor Erik Durant

Our goal is to create a modern day tribute to honor all men and women—past, present and future—within the fishing industry, especially those who have lost their lives in pursuit of their profession. Fishermen, through their courage, dedication and sacrifice, have been the cornerstone of our community. Creating a tribute to the fishermen of our community…past, present and future.

Our group is making great strides, but there is much work to be done. We have received approval from the City of New Bedford for a prime piece of property on the land known as ‘Monkeys Island’, located on East Rodney French Blvd., overlooking the entrance to New Bedford’s outer harbor. Without our communities support that can not be accomplished; this monument is in honor of all fishing families.

The Fishermen’s monument is currently in its final stage, yet we still have a lot of work ahead of us.

Please consider participating in our Road Race/Walk, providing a raffle and/or donating to our event or purchasing a stone that will be part of the design of the new Fishermans Tribute Plaza on East Beach.
