Trail Building Workshop (8:00am-5:00pm)
​This one-day workshop will focus on sustainable trail layout and design for natural surface trails and include both classroom and field time for up to 10 participants. A typical discussion around what is a sustainable trail will cover trail construction techniques including; out sloped tread, sustainable grades, frequent grade reversals, erosion resistance, a path that traverses along the side slope, provision for sheet flow of runoff, positive user experiences and low maintenance. Nature Discoveries, Sponsored by Lloyd Center for the Environment (9:30am-10:30am)
Nature Discoveries occurs on the third Saturday of each month. Join us as we investigate nature topics by reading nature-themed books and exploring the Lloyd Center. Live animal demonstrations, specimens to observe and touch, hikes, activities and crafts bring nature themes to life for our Nature Discovery guests. This hour long adventure is appropriate for children ages 2-6. (Younger or older siblings are welcome as well). Southworth Library – Fall Book Sale (10:00am-2:00pm)
As the days shorten and the cooler weather arrives, book lovers of all ages look forward to curling up with a good book. Southworth Library’s Fall Book Sale provides an opportunity to stock up on select second-hand books selling for 50 cents to $2.00. The sale features many well-stocked categories, including fiction, history, biography, sports, the arts, children and young adults, cooking and home décor. There are also CDs and DVDs, games and jigsaw puzzles. The semi-annual book sales are the main fundraisers for The Friends of Dartmouth Libraries. Book sale proceeds are used to sponsor library programs such as summer reading for children, passes to museums and parks, movie showings, special events and the Molly Little Winter Art Film Series. Rhode Island’s Wildlife and Preservation (11:00am-12:00pm)
Join Mary Grande from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management as she helps us explore the wild world of Rhode Island’s Wildlife. Play games, see (and touch!) real artifacts, and learn about what the state is doing to help protect the many critters’ home, and how you can help! This event is geared towards students from 3rd-5th grade, but other students (and their parents) are welcome to join! Registration is suggested but not required. Take a photo with Ron Hammond’s antique red McCormick Farmall tractor. Climb aboard Joe Beaulieu’s hay wagon (and pick out a pumpkin to buy). Best Friends Family Day (Wareham) (11:00am-2:00pm)
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for Saturday, October 21! This free family event includes train rides, face painting, games/prizes, a visit from farm animals and so much more! BBA’s “Kids Halloween and Children of the Maze (3:00pm-6:00pm)
Games, DJ, costume contest, maze & trick or treating. $10 per child. Adults are FREE. Creatures of the Maze will be held Friday & Saturday evening, October 20 & 21, 2017 from 7-10 pm. Mayor Mitchell’s Classic Movie Series at the Zeiterion: Gregory Peck in “Moby Dick” (4:00pm)
Join us for a free viewing of Moby Dick – a New Bedford-favorite that premiered at this theater in 1956. Join Mayor Mitchell at The Z, 61 years later, and thrill to the tale of Captain Ahab on a voyage fueled by obsession and vengeance. Starring Gregory Peck. Directed by John Huston with screenplay by Huston and Ray Bradbury. Run time: 2 hours.

Boo at the Zoo (6:00pm-9:00pm)
Slightly spooky fun that cannot be missed! Grab your favorite costume and join us at BOO AT THE ZOO for an evening of Halloween fun! There’s enough thrills and chills for all ages at BOO AT THE ZOO! Climb aboard a spoooooky train ride, stroll down the Trick or Treat trail, take a spin on our wild carousel, and enjoy Halloween themed activities plus animal encounters! Save time getting into BOO AT THE ZOO by purchasing a Bat Pass. A Bat Pass is a single use, non-refundable pass and must be surrendered at the separate Bat Pass entrance upon your visit. Zoo Members: $11/adult and $7/child. Non-Members: $16/adult and $12/child. Rides are included in the price of admission. Children under 3 are free.

HOWL at Buttonwood Zoo (7:30pm-11:00pm)
Join us for a blood curdling evening of old-school horror fun at the Buttonwood Park Zoological Society’s 2nd annual Halloween event, HOWL! This 21+ event will be held on Friday, October 20th from 7:30-11 PM at the Buttonwood Park Zoo. The evening will include live music in our Grooveyard, killer brew tasting room, wicked cocktails, animal encounters and frightfully good food truck offerings. Costumes are not required, but we encourage guests to wear throwback costumes to classic horror films.

All events coordinated by the Buttonwood Park Zoological Society play a key role in raising critical fund for the Buttonwood Park Zoo. These funds endure the highest level of animal care, environmental education and wildlife education programs.
