The Fort Taber Fort Rodman Historical Association, Inc. in cooperation with the City of New Bedford are sponsoring a living history camp Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3, 2015 as part of the continuing recognition of the Centennial Observance of World War I (1914 – 1918).

The camp will be open, free to the public, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM each day. Re-enactors representing American, British, Canadian, and German soldiers will provide a living history camp outside of Batteries Walcott and Gaston on the south side of the City’s Fort Taber Park.

World War I, also known as the First World War or the Great War, began on July 28, 1914 and ended at 11:00 AM on November 11, 1918 (11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month).

The war was a global conflict mostly centered in Europe but saw significant fronts in Africa, Middle East, Southwest Asia, and in the Pacific Islands. More than 9 million combatants and 7 million civilians died as a result of the war, a casualty rate exacerbated by the belligerents’ technological and industrial sophistication, and tactical stalemate. It was one of the deadliest conflicts in history, paving the way for major political changes, including revolutions in many of the nations involved.

The Fort Taber ~ Fort Rodman Historical Association, Inc. is committed to assisting in the restoration, preservation and perpetuation of Fort Rodman and its surroundings and demonstrating how this fort is representative of the development of coastal fortifications from the Revolutionary period though the mid-20th century. The Association also is dedicated to preserve the memory and legacy of our area veterans and their service to our nation.

The Fort Taber ~ Fort Rodman Military Museum is open daily from 1:00PM to 4:00PM.
