The 2015 Thursdays in the Park Concert Series concludes on Thursday, August 27, with Ambrose Wise singing traditional music of Newfoundland. The free concert takes place from 6:30-7:30 PM in the garden at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, 33 William Street, downtown New Bedford. In the event of inclement weather, the performance
will be moved indoors to the National Park Theater.

Ambrose Wise brings new life to traditional Newfoundland songs. These songs would have been lost to time had it not been for the efforts of Maud Karpeles, Elizabeth Greenleaf, Kenneth Peacock, Gerald Doyle, and others who, in the late1920s and into the 1950s, collected and transcribed the songs sung at Newfoundland towns and outposts.

Wise will joined by Al and James Soper. The Sopers have developed a repertoire of traditional Newfoundland music inspired by their father, who used to play some of these tunes on his accordion when they were little.

This year’s Thursday in the Park Concert Series is co-sponsored by the New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center, a new non-profit organization dedicated to telling the story of the City’s commercial fishing industry.
