New Bedford High School College and Career Readiness Center to Celebrate October College Month

Activities planned to assist students and families with college exploration, planning and the application process

The New Bedford High School College and Career Readiness Family Engagement Center in collaboration with Educational Talent Search, College Access, and GEAR UP are planning a month full of special events to kick-off the college exploration, planning, and application process for all NBHS students and their families.

October College Month schedule of events includes:

College Info Session for NBHS Parents & Students will be held on Thursday, October 2, 6-8:00 PM in the Family Engagement Center, Room B-211. All guests should enter through the Main Office doors. NBHS Guidance Counselors and Educational Talent Search staff will present important information on the college admissions and Common Application process. Seniors are encouraged to attend. Spanish and Portuguese translation assistance will be available.

SAT/ACT Test Registration Assistance for NBHS students and families will be available on Wednesday, October 8, Friday, October 17, and Monday, October 27, at 2:45PM in the Family Engagement Center, Room B-211. Fee waivers for SAT Tests are available for NBHS students. Staff will be on hand to assist with the registration process.

NBHS Fall Open House Night is on Thursday, October 9, from 6-8:00PM. Families are invited to come and discuss their child’s progress with his or her teachers. Staff will be on hand at the CCR Family Engagement Center, in room B-211, to answer any college planning or admissions questions as well.

Go Public! at New Bedford High School on Tuesday, October 14, is a special event to promote programs and opportunities offered at Massachusetts community colleges, state universities and UMass campuses. Sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education and the New Bedford GEAR UP Program, Go Public! brings together admissions representatives, student ambassadors and faculty from campuses across the state. The program features a panel of college student speakers to promote math and science programs for students in the state’s public higher education system, as well as an admissions fair with STEM-related demos and activities. “We are thrilled to be part of the statewide Go Public! campaign; all 2,400 New Bedford High students will have an opportunity to learn more about college majors, study abroad opportunities and STEM career options,” said Marlene Sabeh, the GEAR UP Lead Coordinator at New Bedford High School.

PSAT Testing for all NBHS Sophomores and Juniors will take place during the school day on Wednesday, October 15. The PSAT prepares all high school students for the actual SATs, and qualifies them for national merit scholarships. Tutorials and practice tests are available in GEAR UP and Talent Search offices, Room B-293 as well as the CCR Family Engagement Center, Room B-211.

College Essay Writing Workshops for NBHS students will take place on Wednesday, October 22, and November 4, from 2:45 to 4:00, in the CCR Family Engagement Center, Room B-211. A New Bedford High School English teacher will provide students with helpful tips on how to write a captivating college essay.

The 2014 NBHS Fall College Fair will be held on Thursday, October 16, in the Green Cafeteria from 1:00-3:30PM for NBHS students only. All students and families from the Greater New Bedford community are invited to attend from 5-7:00PM. Please use the Green House entrance to the left of the Main Office on Hathaway Boulevard.

Help with the Common Application for NBHS students and families will be available on Friday, October 17, at 2:45 in the CCR Family Engagement Center, Room B-211.

“We are planning to hold additional engaging and informative workshops for NBHS students and families throughout the year at the NBHS College and Career Readiness Family Engagement Center,” said Center coordinator, Lynne LaBerge. The mission of the NBHS College and Career Readiness Family Engagement Center is to create a welcoming and culturally responsive environment where all NBHS families can engage in college and career planning activities.

The CCR Family Engagement Center has assistance from a coalition comprised of community partners with established capacity to outreach to students and families. Members include:
