Gipsy Kings 25th Anniversary Tour comes to the Zeiterion

The Gipsy Kings’ musical style has been called “Rumba Flamenca” which combines traditional flamenco styles with Western Pop and Latin rhythms, Latin and Cuban styles, Arabic, reggae, jazz, and–of course–gypsy styles!

The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center is proud to host the 25th Anniversary celebration of the ever-popular, Grammy Award winning Gipsy Kings featuring Nicolas Reyes and Tonino Baliardo on Saturday, October 18 at 8PM. Beloved the world over, the Gipsy Kings captivate fans with their unique and irresistible blend of traditional flamenco styles with Western pop and Latin rhythms. The Gipsy Kings won their first Grammy this year in the Best World Music Album category for their album Savor Flamenco. This is the group’s sixth nomination, and a record for the most nominations in the world music category. Some of Gipsy Kings’ greatest hits include “Volare,” “Samba Samba,”and “Bamboleo” to name a few. The group has also recorded popular renditions of classics like “Hotel California.” Over the years, a number of Gipsy Kings’ top hits have been highlighted on television and film, including Glee, Dancing with the Stars, Entourage and The Big Lebowski.

Established from generations of music, culture, and history, the Gipsy Kings are made up of two families – the sons of the renowned flamenco duo Jose Reyes (Nicolas, Canut, Paul, Patchai, and Andre) and Manitas de Plata (Tonino, Paco, and Diego). They joined forces to combine famous traditional sounds with their own flare to form what is known as Gipsy Kings.

The band speaks French, and performs in a Spanish dialect of Gitane, the native Gipsy language that is a mixture of Spanish, French, and Catalan. The root of the Gitane culture is in the southern part of Spain, the region that has given the world flamenco music, bullfighting and Moorish-influenced Architecture. The people in that area are known as “Gitanos” – the Spanish Romani people who fled Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).

The Gipsy Kings have sold over 25 million albums worldwide. Their first U.S. album, Gipsy Kings was released in the United States in 1987, and charted for 40 weeks. This 25 year old album has been certified gold or platinum in at least 15 countries.
