THE CAT, THE SUN, AND THE MIRROR is a private-detective story like no other. Its basis is twofold. First, the ancient Japanese myth of the Sun Goddess who disappears, thus casting the world in darkness. Second, the American myth of the loner hero. So what happens is this: one morning people in the city—“any city”—wake up to find “the Sun was gone—missing—that was a fact.” Who to turn to? A private eye, that’s who—but not just anyone: But where would he find our missing Lady Sun? His search takes him to Mister Bigg, “who wears the crown, the boss of all the crime in town”; then to Major Domo, a go-between for the elite—“the jet-set crowd, the power brokers, the proud”; then to the Sun’s brother, the Lord of the Sea, who has aspirations to be “number one—a much bigger Ocean, without the Sun.” Blind alleys, all of them. Finally, aided by a tip from the guru-like Old Dog and helped by Major Domo’s daughter, the Majorette, Cool Cat finds the Sun in a very unlikely place. But will she return to shed her light on a world that no longer appreciates her?

The book is 96 pages, roughly half of them illustrations. In the past few years, as the story was developed in readings in various parts of the country (see list of readings and performances at coolcatnoir.tumblr.com). The combination of these illustrations and the rhymed verse of the narration and dialogue have charmed audiences of all ages.

THE CAT, THE SUN, AND THE MIRROR is an enchanting mixture of fantasy, film-noir atmospherics, romance, and socially conscious messaging. Its unique characters, and a fun writing style has broad appeal: that has been tested in readings and performances.

Wow, this private eye is one Cool Cat—He’s got to be, wearin’ that hat.
