“Toys For Tots” drive kicks off another season of giving on its 70th year

Colonel Kerry A. Gilpin and the Massachusetts State Police are proud to again support the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Program to help local families in need.

Members of the Massachusetts State Police and United States Marine Corps Reserve appeal to the public to support Toys for Tots through donations of toys or money. The donations will assist charitable organizations that provide children’s gifts for Massachusetts families in need.

This year is the 70th anniversary of the Marine Corps Reserve’s leadership of the Toys for Tots Program. During this season of giving, as we have for the last 33 years, the Massachusetts State Police look forward assisting with the Toys for Tots drive.

Donors are asked to give new, unwrapped, non-violent toys, designed for either boys or girls, age’s newborn to 14. As in years past, toys can be dropped off in the lobby of any State Police Barracks through Wednesday, Dec. 13. (The Danvers Barracks is off to a head start with these five new pals pictured here.)

The State Police eighth annual “Fill the Cruiser” event is scheduled for Dec. 2, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are ten Toys ‘R’ Us locations statewide. The locations of participating stores are as follows:

Auburn, 416 Southbridge St.;
Dedham, 302 Providence Highway;
Framingham, Shoppers World Plaza, 1 Worcester Rd.;
Kingston, 8 Gallen Rd.;
North Attleboro, 1190 South Washington St.;
North Dartmouth, Dartmouth Towne Center, 492 State Rd.;
Peabody, North Shore Shopping Center, Route 128 at Route 114;
Springfield, 1686 Boston Rd.;
Swansea, 86 Swansea Mall Drive; and
Woburn, 366 Cambridge St.

During the Fill the Cruiser event, Troopers and Marines will be collecting donations for Toys for Tots. We hope that you will join us in kicking off this event and spreading the word of a worthy cause.

Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation can mail a check made out to Toys for Tots MA and mail it to MSP Toys for Tots Coordinator, 124 Acton St., Maynard MA 01754 or they may visit the program’s website at www.toysfortots.org.

Anyone needing assistance requesting toys, and who is not currently working with a nonprofit agency/organization or church, is encouraged to check with their local Toys For Tots county campaign. Every Toys For Tots county handles individual family requests differently. It is important that those individual families register in timely manner. The following website will assist with the selection of the individual Toys For Tots counties in Massachusetts:

19 Things To Do This Weekend (Dec. 01 – Dec. 03)

Winter is officially here, but it seems like we have been making out in terms of temperatures. Our days have been uncharacteristically warm and pleasant. It isn’t until the mornings and evenings that we are reminded that it is, indeed, winter. That’s when we have to kick the heat on because temperatures often drop below freezing. So far, we haven’t had to utter the four-letter “S” word.

As always, click on the title for more or detailed information on the event. Most of the events were pulled from our event calendar where you can find hundreds of local area events each month. The event calendar is FREE, so if you are a local business, and not taking advantage of FREE publicity, shame on you! Are you a local business and want to sponsor this high traffic, weekend guide? Want to significantly reduce crime in New Bedford? Replace the judges

I would not want to be a New Bedford police officer – risking your life to arrest career criminals only to repeatedly see them released back into society the next day on a low bail or personal recognizance. It’s the same 1% of New Bedford committing the majority of the crime because criminals have no fear of our weak judicial system.

Tuesday was a perfect example – 37-year old Roberto Lugo-Gallardo was arrested with fentanyl and is being charged with intent to distribute it. Fentanyl is the synthetic opioid that is causing the vast majority of overdoses in New Bedford and across the country. The judge in this case doesn’t seem to care and released Lugo-Gallardo on personal recognizance.

A few weeks ago, Michael Viruet didn’t let 20 previous convictions stop him from being arrested with 10 grams of Fentanyl and more than $3,000 in cash. Police seized the drugs after Viruet led New Bedford police officers on a dangerous police chase which resulted in him crashing into a ditch. Again, Fentanyl is causing all the overdoses and this dealer wouldn’t be selling it if judges did their job.

Three weeks ago, an alert New Bedford police officer picked up 26-year old Ramon Sanchez while he was driving. He had open cases for two counts of assault and battery on a pregnant woman, two charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, breaking and entering in the daytime and breaking and entering in the daytime to commit a felony. Sanchez has a long criminal history, including charges of assault and battery on a police officer, assault with a dangerous weapon and cruelty to animals. How was he even on the street?

In August of this year, 52-year old Mark Salazar was arrested for at least the 87th time at the notorious drug den known as 358 North Front Street. This is the property that was raided three times by New Bedford police in a 6 week period this summer. Salazar had 52 convictions, but found his way back on the streets.

In January of this year, Ronnie Oliver, a New Beford man with 80 arraignments and 19 convictions, was given $500 bail after he was arrested for breaking into Buzi Salon and Hungry Whale Pub.

These are just a few examples of hundreds just this year alone on how our judges have allowed career criminals back onto the street to victimize us. There is absolutely no reason why criminals with double digit convictions should be given low bails or simply released on personal recognizance.

Our politicians have also failed us. They refuse to hold judges accountable or pass laws to be tougher on career criminals that menace society and burden our hard working police officers. If we want to make New Bedford a safer place, our representatives have to replace the judges that continue to allow career criminals back on the streets to terrorize society. Our police do their jobs very well, it’s time for the politicians and judges to do theirs or be replaced.

OPINION: One addict’s perspective on “Addiction is a choice, not a disease.”

“I loved your article about addiction. The stigma saddens me. I’m a recovering addict and I know what it’s like to be bound by the grips of addiction and using drugs against my own will. It’s safe to say that some people will never understand and I’m grateful for that. I wouldn’t wish addiction on my worst enemy. So I pray for them to be relieved of all their hate and negativity.

Recently my ten year old daughter used the word junkie. It broke my heart. It also inspired me to write this I don’t know why I’m even sending it but I guess it was refreshing to see someone write something different about addiction. So thank you for that.”

Dear Stigma,

My name is Coralee, and I am recovering addict. I’m one of those “junkies”you say horrible things about whenever someone talks about addiction.

I get that it’s hard to forget what we did in active addiction, it’s hard for us to forget as well, but let me ask you something: “What’s the worst thing you’ve done?”

I know you won’t tell me, but just think about it. That thing you regret that no one knows about. Well, what if it wasn’t a secret? What if you were branded because of that thing you wish you could take back? That’s sort of what it’s like to be one of “US.” Being an addict isn’t the worst thing in the world, but you disagree.

Don’t be mistaken – if I could take it all back I would. “Poof!” It would be gone. But that’s impossible. I can’t even do as you do and pretend it never happened. In order for me to make sure I never make the same mistake, I have to work hard to make sure that I don’t. If I don’t put in the work, my disease will tell me it’s OK to have one drink, smoke one blunt, or shoot one bag, and my disease will now not resurface again and continue to progress and believe me it will.

Now you are probably saying “ADDICTION IS CHOICE, NOT A DISEASE!”, right? Yes, it does start with the choice. Just like all the choices you made in the past. You drink the same beer, smoked the same pot, maybe even sniff the same line that I did, but you were able to take it or leave it and just walk away. Myself, however? I was not so fortunate, and because I suffer from the disease of addiction (for which I might add there is no known cure) I will for the rest of my life either struggle to stay high or fight to stay clean.

We didn’t grow up wanting to be addicts. I wanted to be a songwriter actually. I never pretended my dolls were copping drugs or my trolls were dope sick. I never said “When I grow up I want to be a liar a cheat, homeless, and have my daughter taken away from me and be involved heavily with DCF. Nobody wants to suffer from the disease of addiction. Unfortunately there is no choice in the matter, we just do. We could have never predicted the havoc one bad choice could bring us. So don’t forget you made that same choice too. You were just lucky that it was me with the disease and not you.

If you are still doubting that addiction is a disease contact the CDC or the surgeon general – they classified it as one, but I bet you know more about it than they do, right? I hope and pray you never have to learn about addiction the hard way and find out someone you love suffers from the disease, but rest assured if they are we will welcome them into our community of recovery and help them, because we have a disease not a moral deficiency. We have found a new way to live. We want to keep it that way and help other addicts find the same way.

So the next time you are going to go on another rant on social media condemning someone who is suffering, stop and think about that. You are hurting people. People who have the disease and the people who love them. You have no idea how many people on your friends list that might be, odds are it’s more than a few, unfortunately. Some of which are suffering at this very moment. Why spread the hate and judgment? While you have the right to your own opinion, hurting people is wrong now matter how you look at it.

With nothing but LOVE,
Coralee DaCosta.

New Bedford Seafood Manager Pleads Guilty to Tax Evasion

A New Bedford seafood manager pleaded guilty today in federal court in Boston to failing to report $75,000 in earnings on his tax returns.

Orlando Cardoso, 44, of New Bedford, pleaded guilty to two counts of filing a false income tax return. U.S. District Court Chief Judge Patti B. Saris scheduled sentencing for March 8, 2018.

Cardoso swore on his 2012 and 2013 tax returns that the only income he had received was from his employer. However, Cardoso had received over $75,000 in cash and checks from his employer’s supplier and failed to report the income on his tax returns.

MariMed Purchases New Bedford Building for Cannabis Cultivation

MariMed Inc., today announced the purchase of a 137,500 sq. ft. industrial building on 17 acres at 167 John Vertente Blvd., in the New Bedford, Mass., industrial park for a purchase price of $6,895,000. MariMed will develop approximately 70,000 sq. ft. into a full service state of the art medical cannabis cultivation and production facility that has been leased to ARL Healthcare, Inc. (ARL), a Massachusetts not for profit corporation. MariMed assisted ARL Healthcare in its successful application to be awarded a Massachusetts Registered Marijuana Dispensary (RMD) License for cultivation, production, and dispensing of medical cannabis. Under the license, and in agreement with the City of New Bedford, this facility will be used solely to cultivate and produce cannabis medicine and related products. These products will be distributed to patients licensed by the Massachusetts Dept. of Public Health at three ARL dispensaries in other municipalities.

New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell stated, “The acquisition of the John Vertente Boulevard site is an important milestone because it brings us that much closer to the day when the City is able to share in ARL’s success under the Host Community Agreement we negotiated in 2016. Under our Agreement, once the facility is operational, ARL will provide substantial annual benefits to the City and residents of New Bedford, including significant mitigation payments, the hiring of local workers, and the use local small businesses. Based on the company’s community-oriented approach and the effective working relationship we have developed, I have every expectation ARL will succeed here in New Bedford.”

MariMed will assist ARL in the development and ongoing management of this cultivation and manufacturing facility. ARL expects to employ 50 to 100 people and commence cultivation in the first quarter of 2018, with the first products in dispensaries in second or third quarter of 2018, pending receipt of state approvals.

“As a Massachusetts-based company, we congratulate our neighbor ARL on their successful license application and are eager to help them become the best medical cannabis company in this State to provide high quality, safe cannabis medicine and treatments to licensed patients in need of consistent relief,” stated Jon Levine, MariMed CFO. “This property purchase represents the continuing execution of MariMed’s strategy to acquire assets that will, in turn, increase revenue and earnings for all of our business units and generate tax revenue for the state.”

“There is no substitute for experience, and that is why we chose MariMed to design, build out and optimize our cultivation, production and dispensary facilities,” noted Kenneth Housman, president of ARL Healthcare, Inc. “MariMed’s standard operating procedures and best practices have proven successful with its medical cannabis clients in multiple states.”
