The Zeiterion presents Havana Nights: 2016 Spring Gala Saturday, April 2, 6:00 p.m.

“Havana is a mistress of pleasure, the lush and opulent goddess of delights.” Cabaret Quarterly, 1956

The interior of the historic Zeiterion Performing Arts Center will be transformed into a vibrant 1950s Cuban Cabaret for the second annual gala and fundraiser, “Havana Nights” on Saturday, April 2 at 6:00 p.m. The stage will triple in size to become an exclusive Havana social club, complete with a nine-piece Latin band, three-course meal, salsa dance performances, and a silent auction that includes a vacation for two to Portugal. Tickets for The Havana Nights Spring Gala are $150 per person, and all proceeds benefit the mission of The Zeiterion. Tickets and information are available at www.zeiterion.og, 508-997-5664 x 143 or at the Zeiterion box office, 684 Purchase Street, New Bedford.

Last year, a capacity crowd flocked to the 1920s inspired inaugural event. This year, attendees will experience the Havana high-life, and travel back to the island where time stood still. “We love a good theme here at The Z!” says the Zeiterion’s Development Director Nicole Merusi. “We want to be sure our guests aren’t coming to just another fundraiser. For us it’s a full theatrical production – complete with costumes, backdrops, and entertainment. We are a performing arts center, after all.”

Guests will be entertained by salsa dancers from Dancing the Dream Productions, as they demonstrate the classic steps of cha-cha and salsa-rueda styles. Inspired, attendees will have a chance to dance to the music of an outstanding nine-piece authentic Latin band, Grupo Sazon. This high energy band with Latin and Cuban influences is led by master percussionist Jesus Andujar, a native of the Caribbean.

The “Havana Nights” three-course meal is inspired by the cuisine of Cuba and includes croquetas jamon (crispy serrano ham croquettes), papas rellanas (fried spicy beef stuffed potatoes) and Mini Tres Leches Cupcakes. The bar will feature signature drinks like the “Hemingway Daquiri” and “Presidente” – a cocktail named in honor of Mario García Menocal, president of Cuba from 1912 to 1920, made of dark rum, curacao, white vermouth and a dash of grenadine.

The sights, sounds and flavors of Cuba will inspire tour globe trotters to explore the world, and “Havana Nights” silent auction items will get them there! Guests will have the opportunity to bid on a vacation for two to Portugal with round-trip airfare provided by Sata Airlines and accommodations provided Sagres Vacations; a weekend on Martha’s Vineyard, and a private sunset sail around Buzzard’s Bay.

All proceeds from this exotic evening will benefit The Z’s mission to entertain, educate, and inspire our community through the performing arts and contribute to the cultural, social, and economic vitality of the South Coast.

Tickets to the annual Zeiterion Performing Arts fundraiser “Havana Nights: 2016 Spring Gala” are available for purchase at www.zeiterion.org, by calling 508-997-5664 x 143, or in person at the box office at 684 Purchase Street, New Bedford, MA. Box Office Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Faces Of New Bedford – #38: Carlos Araujo

Meet Carlos Araujo, 19-year-old photographer who spent his entire life in New Bedford.

His passion for photography came about one day when his cousin Kathy asked him to do a photoshoot for her and her boyfriend. She placed a camera in his hand and, with no prior experience, started shooting away. Although they weren’t the best photos she saw that he had a very great eye for composition and told him he should look into getting his own camera.

After saving for a few months, collecting all that he could form his checks from McDonalds, at the age of 16 he bought a camera and started taking pictures of his friends around the city. Soon after, he started making a business out of his photography, traveling to Boston and networking with photographers across the region. During the week he would balance school, soccer and his job and spend his weekends growing and perfecting his craft.

By 18, he had graduated high school and even started attended the New England School of Photography. One night, with no money or ticket in his pocket, he attempted to get into RCA Recording artist Los’ show, to hopefully photograph and talk with the rapper. He was able to get in and send the photos to Los, who loved his style and asked him to photograph the rest of his tour. The two became really close and Los offered him the chance of a lifetime, to come out to LA and become his personal photographer.

In the time between then and now, he has had the chance to work with artists such as Jeremiah, Lucas Coly, Justin Combs, P. Diddy, and Justin Bieber. He feels like the support he has back at home, from his friends and family during this journey have pushed him to be able to get to the places that he has at such a young age. He is constantly encouraged by the local artists and photographers, providing constant fuel for him to put New Bedford on the map as an emerging creative force.

“Knowledge is King!”

NBHS Whaler Jazz Band Performs At Local Jazz Festival

New Bedford High School’s Whaler Jazz Band performed at Berklee College of Music’s High School Jazz Festival on Saturday, February 6, with NBHS students bringing two awards back to New Bedford.

The full jazz band received an award for participating in 10 Berklee High School Jazz Festivals. The band scored 243 out of 300 possible points for their efforts on Saturday.

Senior pianist Keegan Marshall-House won the Judges’ Choice Award for excellence in the performance.

“It was an honor to receive the award,” said Keegan. “I had a very good day, and everything about it was a fun and worthwhile experience.”

This weekend, the New Bedford High School Jazz Band made its return to Berklee College of Music’s High School Jazz Festival. The festival gave our students an opportunity to represent Whaler Pride in one of the great institutions of jazz. Along with performing, students were able to listen to performances from their peers around the region and interact with leaders of the jazz community.

Chelsea Spitz, a junior mellophonist, said, “We got to hear how other bands play and mentally note how we can improve as individuals as well as an ensemble.”

“I’m really proud of the students’ efforts and accomplishments this year,” said Jazz Band Director Tim Mason. “We’ve been pushing them really hard, and the students are rising to every challenge. We’re looking to the future now, and preparing for more concerts and competitions. In the end, it’s not about the scores but about being a part of the history of jazz and learning more about and really embracing the style of jazz music.”

“Our students worked hard, and that was reflected in their accomplishments this weekend just as it is year-round,” said Headmaster Bernadette Coelho. “As always, our students showed what Whaler Pride looks like, and that we’re dedicated to our strong program of music, visual and performing arts at NBHS.”

The Berklee High School Jazz Festival has been running for 48 years, with over 120 bands performing this year from places as far away as Puerto Rico and Denmark. It is held annually, usually in February, and is free and open to the public.

The New Bedford High School Whaler Jazz Band has upcoming performances in March at the NBHS Jazz and Show Choir Festival, and May at the Music in the Parks Festival in Agawam, MA, the NBHS Spring Concert, and the Rotch-Jones-Duff House Jazz in the Gardens Concert.

The Narcan Butterfly Effect

There is a debate that rages on social media every time Narcan comes up; do you save heroin users with Narcan or let them die? Should medical professionals be reviving heroin addicts multiple times? Ten times? There were several car accidents recently in New Bedford involving overdoses, one involving an innocent man who was crushed by an SUV while unloading his van.

Just this month a Weymouth firefighter was suspended for 90 days over a Facebook post against using Narcan to save addicts. Here is what he posted:

Many people believe that Narcan allows addicts to take risks knowing that they will be revived should they overdose. Police in Massachusetts are even finding used Narcan kits in drug dealers’ homes.

Eight used Narcan kits were found in the Davidson Ave. apartment. Marhefka reportedly told police that she had dispensed the Narcan to users who overdosed in her apartment. Two unopened kits and more than 100 dirty syringes were also found at the apartment.

Most people are compassionate and believe in saving drug abusers unlimited times, or until they get help. You will hear frequently, “If it was your son, daughter, brother or sister, you’d change your tune and want to save them.”

While saving addicts is a must, there is a Butterfly Effect on society.

First, there is a high cost associated with saving a person overdosing. Not only does Narcan cost the taxpayers in Massachusetts millions of dollars annually, it costs thousands of dollars every time emergency personnel arrive on the scene and save an overdosing person. When a person overdoses and someone calls 911, you will generally see police, fire and EMS personnel arrive on the scene to save the person. Additionally, if fire, police and EMS are responding to overdosing victims then resources are not only strained, they may not be available for another emergency like a fire, heart attack or care accident.

Second, overdosing victims are not only a danger to themselves, they can be a danger to the public should they overdose while driving a car. This past weekend a man overdosed while driving a Ford F250, hitting and snapping a utility pole. Medics arrived, administered Narcan and saved the mans life.

Last month a man seriously injured another man reportedly on the way to a methadone clinic. He was speeding down Bellville Avenue and likely passed out at the wheel colliding with a parked van, crushing one man between his SUV and the van. A second man near the van was also injured. The first victim was hurt so bad that he needed to be evacuated by helicopter to a Rhode Island hospital. The driver of the vehicle was overheard saying that he was on his way to a methadone clinic downtown.

While Narcan is a great tool to bring overdosing people back to life, there are consequences that the rest of society must deal with, especially when overdose victims are allowed back on the street the same day. Yes, addicts overdosing are brothers, sisters, sons and daughters, but what if you save a man from overdosing and that man then cripples or kills your loved one who was simply trying to unload tools out of his/her work van? In Massachusetts, thousands of people are being saved with Narcan each year; good or bad, this has caused and will cause a Butterfly Effect that we all have to deal with.

What do you think? Is Narcan a good or bad thing for our community? Is there a limit to how many times Narcan should be used on the same patient? Or unlimited use?
