Your Theatre, INC. will Produce a World Premier of a New Play, The Obraz

Come see The Obraz performed for one weekend only!

Your Theatre will produce a world premier of a new play, The Obraz, by local playwright Ray Veary for one weekend only. There will be an opening night reception April 9th, 2015 at a special location, the historic First Baptist Church at 149 William Street in New Bedford.

The reception is from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with the performance to immediately follow. At the reception, there will be an announcement made by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Mayor Mitchell, and WHALE of **National Trust** designation for First Baptist Church. The public is welcome and refreshments will be served. Donations are welcome. Please note: First Baptist Church is not wheelchair accessible. General admission for The Obraz
is $10.

The Obraz, by Ray Veary, will be directed by Judy Lemay. The play is based upon actual events in 1934 Poland and tells the story of a young cloistered nun, Faustina, who has a vision of an inspired painting and must find a painter who can create it. Inept at the most basic of the convent’s kitchen work, she is also surrounded by skeptics. Some of the other nuns plainly suspect she’s not in her right mind, and the artist she hires presents her biggest obstacle yet. However, our young nun has a couple of unexpected allies on her side. If all saints had pasts, as Augustine once said, then doubtlessly more than a few of those pasts had their untold stories of humanity and humor. The Obraz is a speculation upon the untold story of Faustina.

Performances: April 9, 8:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 149 William St., New Bedford. April 10 & 11, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. and April 12 at 2:30 p.m. performances to be held at the regular location of Your Theatre, Inc. located at 136 Rivet St. (corner of County St.), New Bedford, in the wheelchair accessible auditorium of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. Free off-street parking in church lot off County St.

Please note: First Baptist Church is NOT wheelchair accessible.

General Admission to all performances of The Obraz is $10; seniors, students, and military personnel $8.

Palmer’s Island Light the focus of March Program

Palmer’s Island Light

The Dock-U-Mentaries Film Series continues on Friday, March 20th at7:00 PM with an illustrated talk about Palmer’s Island Lighthouse. Dock-U-Mentaries is a co-production of New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, the New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center, and the Working Waterfront Festival. Films about the working waterfront are screened on the third Friday of each month beginning at 7:00 PM in the theater of the Corson
Maritime Learning Center, located at 33 William Street in downtown New Bedford. All programs are open to the public and presented free of charge.

The Palmer’s Island Lighthouse, was built and first lighted in 1849, fueled at that time by New Bedford whale oil. Once considered one of the most picturesque lighthouses in all of New England, the lighthouse which survived the 1938 hurricane, was nearly destroyed by arsonists in 1966. During the 1990s, the City of New Bedford was named a Millennium Community and the restoration and relighting Palmer’s Island Lighthouse was one of the city’s Millennium projects, coordinated in part by former Director of Marketing and Tourism, Arthur Motta.

On August 30, 1999, approximately 150 years after its original lighting, a grand ceremony marked the relighting of Palmers Island Light. Today, the lighthouse is once again undergoing much needed restoration. Deputy Port Director, Edward Anthes-Washburn, local historian Arthur Motta, and photojournalist Peter Pereira will share historical and contemporary perspectives on the iconic Palmer’s Island Lighthouse and current and past restoration efforts.

The New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and presenting the history and culture of New Bedford’s fishing industry through exhibits and programs. Currently operating as a virtual Center, the NBFHC will eventually lease space in the historic Mariner’s Home which is being renovated by the New Bedford Port Society with help from WHALE.

The Working Waterfront Festival is a project of the Community Economic Development Center of Southeastern MA, a non-profit organization. The free festival, a family friendly, educational celebration of New England’s commercial fishing industry, features live maritime and ethnic music, fishermen’s contests, fresh seafood, vessel tours, author readings, cooking demonstrations, kids’ activities and more. It all takes place on working piers and waterfront parks in New Bedford, MA, America’s #1 fishing port, on the last full weekend in September.

www.workingwaterfrontfestival.org.

New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park was established by Congress in 1996 to help preserve and interpret America’s nineteenth century whaling industry. The park, which encompasses a 13-block National Historic Landmark District, is the only National Park Service area addressing the history of the whaling industry and its influence on the economic, social, and environmental history of the United States. The National Park visitor center is located at 33 William Street in downtown New Bedford. It is open seven days a week, from 9 AM-5 PM, and offers information, exhibits, and a free orientation movie every hour on the hour from 10 AM-3 PM. For more information, call the visitor center at 508-996-4095, go to www.nps.gov/nebe or visit the park’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/NBWNHP

Charges against suspect in MetroPCS homicide upgraded to murder

Bristol County District Attorney Tom Quinn announced this morning that charges against 36-year-old Jason Valliere in connection to the Thursday afternoon homicide of Javon Brown in the City of New Bedford have been upgraded to murder.

Mr. Valliere, of 84 Fredericks St., New Bedford will be arraigned later this morning in New Bedford District Court.

Investigators were rapidly able to gather enough evidence to obtain a warrant for Mr. Valliere’s arrest less than 12 hours after the homicide occurred. Police actively sought Mr. Valliere beginning Thursday evening. He was arrested and initially charged with being an Accessory to Murder-After the Fact late Friday night after coming to the New Bedford Police Station.

New Bedford Police, Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to this office and Homicide Unit prosecutors continue to actively investigate the homicide this weekend, and no further information can be disseminated about the facts of the case or the investigation until Mr. Valliere is arraigned in open court today.

“The fact that this homicide was solved so quickly is a testament to the team work displayed by prosecutors from my office, New Bedford Police Detectives and Massachusetts State Police Detectives from my office. The great working relationships this office has forged with local police departments is a major reason for the high homicide-solve rate we have all seen during recent years,” District Attorney Quinn. “I want to commend all the investigators in this case for their hard work around the clock to quickly bring charges in this case. The public has a basic human right to feel safe in their homes, at their work places and in the community, and my office will continue to work tirelessly to make sure anyone who violates our citizens’ public safety with a brazen act of violence like this will be apprehended as quickly as possible.”

Police received a 911 call regarding a shooting at the MetroPCS cellular phone store at 209 Coggeshall Street around 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Upon arrival, police and rescue personnel located a male shooting victim in the area near the parking lot outside the store. The victim, who resides in Dartmouth, was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:12 p.m. Thursday.
