New Bedford repeat illegal gun user sentenced to 5-7 years in prison

A 24-year-old New Bedford man was sentenced to state prison last week after pleading guilty to illegal firearm and intimidation charges stemming from an August, 2015 incident in New Bedford, District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced.

Jason Morales pleaded guilty in Fall River Superior Court last week to a multi-count indictment, charging him with armed assault in a dwelling, carrying an illegal firearm-subsequent offense, carrying a loaded illegal firearm, two counts of witness intimidation, two counts of threat and one count of vandalism.

New Bedford Police received a 911 call from a New Bedford resident, stating that a man who used to visit his prior roommate had just broken down his front door, demanded money and held a gun to his face. The victim did not know the assailant by name, but could identify him and told police where he believes the suspect resides.

Police are dispatched to the area, and as they approach the location at North Front Street, they observe the defendant walking with a gun in his right hand. Officers order the defendant to drop his weapon, at which point he tosses it into a driveway on Nash Road and begins running from police. After a chase and a brief struggle with police, the defendant is taken into custody.

While being transported to the police station, the defendant, while using extremely vulgar language, threatens to kill the two officers who arrested him, along with their families. He then threatened to rape and sexually assault the female officer who helped arrest him.

After the defendant plead guilty to the indictment, Judge Karen Green sentenced him to serve five to seven years in state prison. This is the defendant’s second conviction for carrying an illegal firearm.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Kristen Wiley.

“This is another defendant running around the City of New Bedford with an illegal firearm, violently threatening a friend’s former roommate,” District Attorney Quinn said. “The defendant’s outrageous threats to the police along with his prior firearm conviction demonstrate that he is a significant danger to the community and the seven year sentence is necessary to protect the public.”

Viral attempted abduction story at Water Wizz turns out to be fake

A viral post on Facebook about a man saving a girl from an attempted abduction at Water Wizz in Wareham has turned out to be fake. Here is the original story:

Here is Water Wizz’s response.

It turns out no one called the police and Water Wizz hasn’t heard anything about the incident. Turtle Boy Sports covered the story very well here.

Fake hero stories like this can be extremely dangerous to a business like Water Wizz. Do you think any parent that heard about this fake abduction story was going to take their children Water Wizz over the weekend? It doesn’t get much lower than Stolen Valor or fake hero stories, especially ones that damage the reputation of a business.

My suggestion is to support Water Wizz every chance you get this summer. Small businesses like that do not deserve to be punished by idiots looking for fame and recognition with fake stories.

50’s Night in downtown New Bedford (2017)

Here are some highlights from 50’s Night in downtown New Bedford on July 20, 2017.

10-year old girl killed on Route 90 while family was changing flat tire

At about 5:53 p.m. Sunday evening, Massachusetts State Troopers from the Weston Barracks responded to a crash on Route 90 westbound, near the North Street Overpass, at mile marker 102.5 in Upton. The crash resulted in the death of a girl who had exited a motor vehicle that had pulled into a breakdown lane.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Charles Dance indicates that two vehicles were traveling together to New York state: a 2011 Toyota Camry and a 1999 Jeep Wrangler, both with New York registrations. The Camry was being operated by a 33-year-old man from New Carrollton, Maryland. The Jeep was being operated by a man from Putnam Valley, N.Y., whose age is not immediately available.

The Jeep became disabled with an apparent flat tire and both vehicles pulled out of the travel lanes to their left, stopping in the left hand breakdown lane, according to the preliminary investigation. The Toyota was ahead of the Jeep with a short distance between them.

The driver of the Camry exited his car and walked back to the Jeep to help change the flat tire. The man’s 10-year-old daughter, also from New Carrollton, Maryland, got out of the Camry and stood by the rear of that vehicle.

Meanwhile, a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe sport utility vehicle was also traveling westbound on Route 90, the Massachusetts Turnpike. The Tahoe, which was pulling a trailer holding a motorcycle, was traveling in the leftmost travel lane. The Tahoe was being operated by a 41-year-old Conway, N.H., man and had as a passenger a 44-year-old woman from Freedom, N.H.

According to the preliminary investigation, as the Tahoe approached the stretch of road where the two vehicles were stopped off to the left in the breakdown lane, the traffic was slowing in front of the Tahoe. As a vehicle in front of the Tahoe decelerated, the Tahoe swerved to the left to avoid colliding with the vehicle ahead.

The Tahoe swerved into the left-hand breakdown lane between the stopped Jeep and the stopped Camry. The Tahoe’s operator then apparently noticed the Camry in directly front of him but could not avoid a collision. The Tahoe caused severe injuries to the 10-year-girl who was standing behind the Camry.

The girl was rushed to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, where she was pronounced deceased.

Other occupants of the Camry included a one-year-old girl, who was in the car at the time of the crash. The infant had no obvious injuries but was also transported to the hospital for precautionary examination.

The crash remains under investigation by Troop E of the Massachusetts State Police, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the State Police Detective Unit for Worcester County. The ongoing investigation includes interviews of involved motorists and witnesses and reconstruction of the crash through analysis of physical evidence. State Police were assisted on-scene by Westborough Fire and EMS.

Pedestrian waving hands on highway struck, killed on Route 95 in Burlington

At about 3:35 a.m. this morning, State Police from the Danvers Barracks responded to a crash involving a pedestrian on Route 95 northbound, south of Exit 34 in Burlington, which resulted in one fatality.

Preliminary investigation indicates that State Police received several calls from motorists regarding a man who was in the middle of Route 95 northbound in the area of Exit 34 waving his hands. State police subsequently received a call from the operator of a Volvo reporting he had struck a pedestrian in the middle of Route 95 in Burlington. Burlington PD was the first on scene and confirmed the pedestrian had been struck and killed.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Gregory Sulser indicates that a 2004 Volvo S80 sedan, operated by a 39-year-old Malden man, was traveling on Route 95 nouthbound, south of exit 34 in Burlington, when it collided with a pedestrian who was in the 2nd travel lane of the roadway. The pedestrian was subsequently struck by a second vehicle, a 2010 Toyota Matrix station wagon, operated by a 22-year-old Brookline, NH man. As a result of the collisions, the pedestrian was determined to be deceased at the scene. Both operators remained on scene and are cooperating with the investigation.

This crash remains under investigation with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section and Middlesex County Detectives. Troopers from the Concord Barracks also assisted on scene.

State Police were assisted on scene by Burlington Police, fire, EMS and Mass DOT.

The victim is an adult male whose identity has yet to be determined.

West Nile Virus Confirmed in Mosquitoes from Marion

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) announced today that West Nile virus (WNV) has been detected in mosquitoes collected from Marion, Massachusetts. Statewide, in 2016, 6,414 mosquito samples were tested for WNV and 189 samples were positive. This is two weeks after the West Nile Virus was confirmed in mosquitoes from Fairhaven.

WNV is most commonly transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquitoes that carry this virus are common throughout the state, and are found in urban as well as more rural areas. While WNV can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at higher risk for severe infection. By taking a few, common-sense precautions, people can help to protect themselves and their loved ones:

Avoid Mosquito Bites

Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours – The hours from dusk to dawn are peak biting times for many mosquitoes. Consider rescheduling outdoor activities that occur during evening or early morning. If you are outdoors at any time and notice mosquitoes around you, take steps to avoid being bitten by moving indoors, covering up and/or wearing repellant.

Clothing Can Help – reduce mosquito bites. Although it may be difficult to do when it’s hot, wearing long-sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin. Use mosquito netting on baby carriage and playpens outdoors.

Apply Insect Repellent – when you go outdoors. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30% or less on older children. Oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under three years of age. Permethrin products are intended for use on items such as clothing, shoes, bed nets and camping gear and should not be applied to skin.~

Mosquito-Proof Your Home

Drain Standing Water – Many mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by either draining or getting rid of items that hold water. Check rain gutters and drains. Empty any unused flowerpots and wading pools, and change water in birdbaths frequently.

Install or Repair Screens – Some mosquitoes like to come indoors. Keep them outside by having tightly-fitting screens on all of your windows and doors.

The Marion Board of Health continues to work closely with the MDPH and other agencies. Please contact the Marion Board of Health at 508-748-3530 if you have any questions. Information about WNV and reports of current and historical WNV virus activity in Massachusetts can be found on the MDPH website at: www.mass.gov/dph/mosquito.

Man with 18 previous drunk driving offenses crashes into utility police in Falmouth

On July 20, 2017, at approximately 8:17 PM, the Falmouth Fire/Rescue Department, the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, the Bourne Police Department, and the Falmouth Police Department responded to a one car crash on North Falmouth Hwy. near the intersection with McMenamy Dr.

The first responding officers found a blue Toyota Scion off of the roadway with a male trapped inside. The car had crashed through utility pole and there were live wires in the roadway.

Officers Martin and Leighton assisted members of the Falmouth Fire Rescue Department in extricating the operator from the vehicle. He was transported to the Falmouth Hospital by FFRD and later transported to a Boston area hospital by a Med-flight ambulance with serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Falmouth Police Department. However, the preliminary investigation indicates that the 2005 Toyota Scion was travelling northerly on North Falmouth Hwy. when it failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The vehicle traveled off of the road and struck a utility pole. The vehicle sustained heavy damage.

The driver was Francis Vierkant, a 58 year-old male from Mashpee. According to the Falmouth Police Department, he has 18 prior drunk driving offenses on his record from Massachusetts and Florida and alcohol appears to have been a contributing factor in the crash.

The road was closed for an extended period of time while first responders extricated the driver, the vehicle was removed, and a crew replaced the utility pole.
