City Sees Dramatic Increase in Recycling, Reduction in Trash to Landfill with Implementation of New System

Way to go New Bedford!

In the eight weeks since New Bedford first rolled out its new automated curbside collection system for trash and recyclables, the City has attained an unprecedented recycling rate and significantly reduced the amount of waste sent to its landfill. New Bedford’s new collection program began on June 23, 2014 and was designed and implemented to increase recycling citywide, reduce litter on city streets, and decrease the amount of solid waste sent to the Crapo Hill landfill.

Under the new curbside collection system, City residents and business owners place trash and recyclables curbside in uniform wheeled carts. The carts are emptied by ABC Disposal’s automated trucks which are equipped with mechanized arms and fueled by compressed natural gas.

“We have received a tremendous amount of positive feedback from residents about the new system. They appreciate the cleaner streets, the sturdy, easy-to-use wheeled carts and the simplicity of the single-stream recycling program. It has been a transition for everyone and throughout the process the City has been open to feedback and has made adjustments to the program where necessary,” said Kenneth Blanchard, Director of Public Facilities and Fleet Management.

In the months leading up to the implementation of the new system, the City was collecting an average of 278 tons of recyclables curbside monthly. In the first full month the new system was online that number spiked to 562 tons of recyclables collected during the month of July. In comparing the same time period, the City collected an average of 3,021 tons of solid waste monthly with the old system and just 2,469 tons of solid waste was collected curbside in July. Officials say the sharp increase in recycling and significant decrease in solid waste disposal will help New Bedford prolong the life of the Crapo Hill Landfill.

Marissa Perez-Dormitzer, District Recycling Coordinator for the Greater New Bedford Regional Refuse Management District said, “There has been a tremendous increase in the amount of recyclables set out by residents and businesses. The tonnage has more than doubled. Residents tell me they used to fill one or two blue bins and now with the carts, they are recycling significantly more.”

The City is closely monitoring the implementation of its new system and continues to educate the public about the program. In February, the City launched a public education and outreach campaign around the program and continues to provide guidance to residents and business owners. Coordinators have met with many organizations and associations to provide information about the program and help answer questions. Inspectors have been knocking on doors, speaking directly with residents and sharing information with them to help them learn the proper way to set out trash and recyclables.

Here are a few helpful tips to properly set out trash and recyclables and avoid fines:

  • Do not overfill the carts. The cart lids must be fully closed.
  • Recycle loose clean bottles, cans, jugs, jars, paper and cardboard together in the cart with the orange lid. Do not put trash, food, clothing, plastic bags, plastic wrap, or Styrofoam into the recycling carts. List of Recyclable Materials
  • Do not set out regular barrels, blue bins or bags curbside.
  • Do not put your cart out earlier than 5:00 P.M. on the day before your scheduled collection day.
  • Call ABC Disposal at (508) 999-2619 to schedule a bulky item pickup.

Beginning on Labor Day, the City will issue warnings if trash and recyclables are not properly set out on the designated collection day. The grace period for non-compliance will expire on September 30, 2014 and violations will result in fines thereafter.

The City of New Bedford Solid Waste and Recycling Ordinance informational flyer is available here: Solid Waste and Recycling Ordinance Informational Flyer. The ordinances describe how property owners and occupants must comply with the program and outline the fee schedule for failing to comply with the solid waste and recycling collection ordinances.

Places To Go: safe, affordable, professional transportation for greater New Bedford!

Places To Go was founded by New Bedford native Ed Pacheco in October 2011

How would it feel to be able to paint the town red with some of your best friends or family and not worry about the driving part? Go to a baseball game, concert or bachelor/bachelorette party? Head to the airport without having to arrange parking or make arrange to be dropped off?

Imagine no stress over traffic. No clamoring to find a designated driver. No arrangements. Just time focused on what’s important: having a good old fashioned time. To memories.

What if I told there is a business dedicated to just that? Right here in New Bedford?

Founded in October of 2011 and managed by New Bedford native Ed Pacheco, Places to Go, LLC is a transportation company that will take you and your group to and from any special event. They will drop you off at T.F. Green airport (Massport Recognized) or at port for the Fast Ferry. At Providence Amtrak Station. Take you and the gals or guys out to celebrate your friend’s last night as an unmarried person. Have an elderly or handicapped friend or family that needs transportation? Done.

Interior of the stylish limovan that seats 8.

Going beyond event that, Places To Go has some rather unique services: they offer some great rates on Tailgate Packages allowing you and the crew to focus all your energy on rooting for the Sox or Patriots. If you are a oenophile like me, they will take you up and down the local wine trails, letting you sample the region’s best wines on their premises. They are one of the sponsors of the Dunkin Donuts center and get great deals on select family venues there and also at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Rhode Island. Stay tuned to their special rates page to keep updated!

They offer all of these services throughout New Bedford, Dartmouth, Acushnet, Fairhaven and Providence, RI. Best of all is that they do it in style. The fleet of vehicles includes a number of 6 passenger caravans, a 7 passenger van, and a 10 passenger van – dubbed “Big Manny” in honor of Pacheco’s grandfather – which has been converted into a luxurious limovan that will make you feel like you feel like you are in an episode of Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous! It has a large-screen TV, Blu-Ray player, bar, coffee maker and more amenities! Currently you can enjoy 3 hours in their limovan (holds 8 people) for only $225!

Mr. Pacheco’s 15 years experience in the management and healthcare industries means you get professional, organized, and thorough service that trickles down to his staff. All the drivers are not only CPR certified, but go through a rigorous interview process: background and reference checks, a drug screening process, criminal and driving record checks.

The biggest kicker of all, is that you get this fantastic, professional service at a rate that won’t break the wallet or purse. Ed’s affordable rates allow anyone and everyone to enjoy what Places To Go has to offer. Receiving a Places To Go gift certificate from a loved one will of course make it even easier to afford!

Places To Go’s solid, reliable fleet of vehicles.

These factors are directly responsible for the skyrocketing success that Places To Go has experienced in less than 3 years. That sort of thing does not happen by accident. Read some of the many testimonials on the Facebook and website. Great service. Reliable, new vehicles. Backed up with a decade and a half experience at an affordable rate is clearly the recipe for a successful transportation business.

And that is just the beginning of big things, considering Place To Go has intentions of growing even further in the next 1-2 years as part of a strategic growth plan. Important to manager Ed Pacheco is that he gives back to the community that contributed to the success of Places To Go. He regularly gives back with an annual food drive and by supporting local, small businesses – proudly purchasing gas, supplies, and everything else needed to fuel his business right here in New Bedford.

So, if you have places to go and want to do so free of worry, you can have confidence that Places To Go will get you there and back home safely!

Registration Open – Walk to End Alzheimer’s Set for September 28

Get some exercise, meet some great people and help a great cause that affects us all!

Get ready! Coming to New Bedford for the very first time is the annual Southeastern Massachusetts Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. One of many walks that occur nationwide, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

The walk is set for Sunday, September 28th at 8:30 a.m. at Fort Taber in New Bedford. Walk organizers have opened online registration and encourage walkers to form teams. There is no fee to participate, however teams and individuals can set up a free online fundraising webpage. Prizes will be awarded to top fundraisers.

Monies raised will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association MA/NH Chapter. James Wessler, President/CEO says, “The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is critically important to funding cutting edge research as well and support services for people who are living with the disease.” Of great benefit are the many FREE programs and support services offered by the association for those dealing with Alzheimer’s.

The event will include an opening ceremony and special tribute paid to those who have experienced Alzheimer’s. The event will be emcee’d by Ashley Bendiksen of New Bedford who will provide remarks on her experience caring for her mother who was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at 48 years old. Other highlights for the Walk include free refreshments, children’s activities, a resource fair featuring local service providers and the opportunity to learn more about the services the Alzheimer’s Association provides.

In addition, Wessler adds, “The Southeastern Massachusetts Walk will also increase public awareness about this difficult disease. The Walk committee is already working hard to make it a powerful experience for everyone who participates.”

Let’s face it… We all know someone who has been affected by Alzheimer’s. Whether it’s a parent, grandparent, spouse, brother/sister, or even a child, Alzheimer’s is growing and affecting families at overwhelming rates. We know the challenge and devastation the disease brings to those who are diagnosed – as well as to those who provide love and care.

This September, you can do something positive to raise awareness, further research, fund support services, and effect change. This September, Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

For information or to participate in the Southeastern Massachusetts Walk to End Alzheimer’s, call 800-272-3900 or visit www.alzwalkMANH.org. The walk is also seeking vendors for its resource fair as well as corporate and community donors and sponsors.

About the Alzheimer’s Association:

Mayor Encourages Residents, Business Owners to Take Preparedness Steps as Hurricane Season Peaks

Know the Risk, Be Prepared, Stay Informed

Mayor Jon Mitchell and New Bedford Emergency Management Director Mark Mahoney today urged City residents and business owners to take basic preparedness measures to mitigate the risk of property damage, injuries and loss of life in the event of a tropical storm or hurricane. Mayor Mitchell declared the month of August 2014 as Hurricane Preparedness Month in New Bedford.

“Tropical Storm Irene in 2011, Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and most recently Hurricane Arthur which dumped eight inches of rainfall on New Bedford, remind us all how important it is to be prepared for severe weather including heavy rain and strong winds,” said Mark Mahoney, Emergency Management Director.

According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season brings a 70 percent likelihood of 8 to 13 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 3 to 6 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 1 to 2 major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of 111 mph or higher). Though Atlantic Hurricane Season officially began on June 1st and continues through November 30th, 75% of the 40 tropical storm systems that have impacted this region over the last 100 years have occurred during the months of August and September.

“I encourage every resident and business owner in New Bedford to take the potential for severe weather seriously. Preparation is the best way to reduce the likelihood of injury or property damage in the event of a hurricane or tropical storm—know the risks, take steps to prepare, and stay informed,” said Mayor Jon Mitchell.

The following information on emergency preparedness is provided by the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency and the City of New Bedford Emergency Management Department:

1. Know Your Risk
Understand the hazards that are associated with hurricanes, and what risks they bring. The biggest hazards associated with tropical storms and hurricanes include storm surge and storm tide, heavy rainfall and inland flooding, as well as high winds. These hazards can cause property damage, widespread loss of power, and catastrophic flooding both inland and along the coast.

In New Bedford, it may be necessary to evacuate parts of the city to protect residents from storm surge flooding. In all but the most severe storms, the area of evacuation will be those low-lying areas outside the New Bedford Hurricane Barrier. Evacuation is also an option for residents living outside potential flood areas who feel more comfortable “riding out” the storm in the safety and security of a mass care hurricane shelter. Residents and businesses are urged to heed evacuation orders from city officials when issued.

2. Be Prepared
There are important steps everyone should take to prepare themselves and their family for the next hurricane or tropical storm. Being prepared reduces the risk of property damage, injury or death.

  • Be prepared to Evacuate or Shelter in Place;
  • Ensure your family is prepared by building an Emergency Kit and developing a Communication Plan;
  • Prepare your home and property for a hurricane.

3. Stay Informed
Stay informed throughout Hurricane Season: know how to receive warnings and alerts, and critical information before and during a storm.

  • The Emergency Alert System (EAS) via radio and television.
  • Local “Reverse 9-1-1” type notification systems. These systems may require opt-in/registration in advance, so check with your local public safety officials about which systems are used in your community and how to register.
  • Wireless Emergency Alerts.
  • MEMA’s free Massachusetts Alerts app that delivers critical information to your smartphone. To receive emergency information on your smartphone, including severe weather alerts from the National Weather Service and emergency information from MEMA, download the Massachusetts Alerts free app. To learn more about Massachusetts Alerts, and for information on how to download the free app (called Ping4Alerts!) onto your smartphone, visit: www.mass.gov/mema/mobileapp.
  • All Hazards National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio.
  • U.S. Coast Guard Marine Broadcast
  • Traditional media.
  • MEMA’s Twitter or Facebook accounts or social media accounts of a public safety agency in your community.
  • A message on Teletypewriters (TTY).

16 Things To Do This Weekend (Aug 01-Aug 03)

This will surely be the biggest “Feast” ever!!

This weekend will be a mild one in terms of temperatures. Much cooler than the past few weekends. Friday will hit the weekend high of 82 degrees and it will drop from there and be in the low 70s on Saturday and Sunday.
