Research Study in New Bedford seeks participants for Constipation Relief

Do you suffer from constipation and want relief?

Stopped by CONSTIPATION?
If you or someone you know suffers from constipation, you may be interested in learning more about a research study being conducted locally in New Bedford, MA.

Chronic constipation is a condition that often results in discomfort and pain that can disrupt your life. When it affects you, it’s difficult to pay attention to anything other than finding a way to relieve the effects of the condition.

But for many people like you with chronic constipation, finding relief isn’t easy. Medications are not always effective or intended to be used chronically and you are left without many options.

In an effort to find more treatment options for people diagnosed with Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC), Novex is now conducting a medical research study of an investigational drug for chronic constipation. The investigational drug is called plecanatide and is specifically for people with CIC.

Through this study, doctors want to evaluate the safety of plecanatide and see if it helps relieve chronic constipation. If you have CIC, please consider learning more about this study.

Who is eligible to participate in this study?

To pre-qualify for this study, you must:

  • Be between 18 and 80 years of age
  • Have chronic constipation for at least 3 months prior to the study
  • Have a history of less than 3 bowel movements per week

All study related visits, tests, and study drugs will be provided to participants at no cost. Reimbursement for travel may also be provided.

One woman’s candid experience of New Bedford’s public transportation

Do you use the local public transport? (StuffUnemployedPeopleLike)

By Cheryl M. Lamb-Spooner

Editor’s Note: This article is an opinion piece submitted by one of our readers.

I don’t have a car so I have to use public transportation to get to most of the places I need to go to here in New Bedford. Here is just a taste of what that experience is like for those of you unfamiliar with it:

A bra is not a top. Just a thought here, but you might want to consider putting something on over that, before coming downtown to the bus terminal.

If you are over a certain size, please do not wear your clothes so tightly that they may tear if you fart. No one wants to see all of that.

Two words: Soap and water. Oh, and how about some deodorant just for shits and giggles?

Please do not talk about your inability to perform cunnilingus due to your cold so loudly that the entire bus station can hear you. I think you just gave that old lady over there a heart attack.

When you were in kindergarten you were taught to wait your turn and stand in line. Those rules still apply, thank you very much. Cutting to the front of the line is just being an a$%hole.

If you see me pause to hold the door for an elderly person, it’s probably not a good idea to just push past both of us. I may have to kill you with her cane just on general principle. Oh, and speaking of “thank you”, you might want to try using that phrase when someone holds a door for you or “excuse me” when you bang into someone really hard instead of just continuing on your way.

Cover your mouth please when you cough. It would also be nice if you could refrain from sneezing on me. (Not just near me, but actually on me. Yuck!)

Pajamas are not proper attire for the court date about which you are telling everyone who will listen to you. I can see why you have that court date by the way you are screaming at the poor attendant at the ticket counter.

Please don’t encourage your little kid to talk to that creepy guy. I think I saw him on a wanted poster. Please don’t let that other creepy guy talk to me. Why the hell is he staring at me? Oh, God..is he actually drooling? Yep. That’s actual drool. What time is my bus again?

Talking about how you tried to smuggle booze into the club in your boobs because the prices at the club were too expensive, but you got caught in as loud a voice as can be? Classy!

There are, like, 30 empty seats on this bus. Don’t sit in the seat immediately next to me and start arguing with your imaginary friend. No, I’m not getting in the middle of it no matter how hard you try to draw me into it. For all I know, your friend may have a valid point.

I am here to ride the bus, not become your BFF. Stop telling me about how your ex is secretly a serial killer and how you decided to stalk him.

Sorry, but being drunk does NOT automatically make you the most attractive male in the world despite what you seem to think. I’m 2 seconds away from using pepper spray on you.

If you shoot up before you get on the bus and start nodding off, there’s a strong possibility you’re going to miss your stop. Don’t yell at the driver because he drove past it while your eyes were closed and you never even told him you wanted to get off there in the first place.

In short, taking the bus in this city SUCKS!

Local metal scene makes resurgence; Club XS to headline 3 bands in benefit show for Donovan House

Dead Skies: Chris Helme on drums, Shannon Chase on bass, Jeff Scissors on vocals, and Craig Fleming on guitar (Stacey Chase)

It appears that the metal scene is FINALLY coming back to New Bedford, thanks to Transient Authority and Club XS.

The first metal show was advertised as St. Valentine’s Day Massacre and was held on Valentine’s Day. I figured since we hadn’t been to a local show in over a year, my husband Shannon and I should go to it and support our friends in Possessed Entity, Necris and We Woke the Bears.

Club XS is located on Union Street It is a spacious venue with a VIP area, a nice long bar, and a stage for the bands. Behind the stage is a 13-foot screen on which Transient Authority projects movies.

I asked T.A. how he chooses what film goes onto the screen. “There is a condition called Synesthesia where people ‘see’ sounds as visual. I hear music and sometimes right away I get a film idea. It’s never random.”

T.A. has been projecting at shows for nine years and recently took a year to learn film editing which has helped him create what he calls a “fourth world” (Performance+Music+Film). When I saw this at the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, I thought it was interesting. You’re there watching the band, but suddenly something happens on film behind them and your head says “What? What was that I just saw?”

Craig Fleming of the band Dead Skies said what T.A. does with film reminds him of Club Babyhead in Providence when that club had TV screens all around the stage.

Three great bands, one great night of music for a local cause!

T.A. has full booking freedom from the owner of X.S. and bands get paid by the door charge. T.A. does his own booking, promotion, fliers, hosting, projection, and sound to keep overhead costs low. He is interested in helping the music scene come back to life in New Bedford and it will happen as long as these bands get support from their fan base.

This Friday April 18, Club XS is having a show with three bands: Mothor, Dead Skies and Teazer. The show is a benefit for the Donovan House, which is a sober transitional housing program for women and their children in New Bedford. Donations of clothes and comfort items are welcome, and prizes will be given to the first 20 people that bring donations. The Southcoast Beard and Mustache Guild will also be there doing a beard and mustache contest, and Maureen Mullaley will have a booth set up selling her recycled guitar string bracelets. All of the guitar strings are donated by these bands that play on stage.

The bracelets are unique and beautiful works of art.

I was able to sit with two of the bands this week: Mothor and Dead Skies. Mothor is Kriss Bliss on guitar, Mario Costa on bass, Mike Cummiskey on drums, and Sonic Nova on vocals. They say their influences include Pentagram, Black Sabbath, Dio, early Judas Priest and early Scorpions. They describe their sound as 70s metal.

Dead Skies is a hardcore band made up of Chris Helme on drums, Shannon Chase on bass, Jeff Scissors on vocals, and Craig Fleming on guitar. Craig and Shannon were present for the discussion.

We talked about how the metal scene has nearly vanished from New Bedford due to venues closing Bands are forced to travel to Worcester and Providence to play, and the New Bedford fans normally just don’t follow.

“There’s no one single place in New Bedford that can take over what New Wave did. New Wave was all original, all the time and they didn’t care how heavy it was, whereas all these clubs in New Bedford that are taking up the music scene will not cater to a death metal or hardcore.” Mario said.

Mothor: Kriss Bliss on guitar, Mario Costa on bass, Mike Cummiskey on drums, and Sonic Nova on vocals (Mothor)

“New Wave had a good following but it took a good three years before they started making a name for themselves and started having those really big nights that we all remember,” Craig said.

“And making a name for themselves as original music, because in the beginning they were letting cover bands play and that was their crowd,” Mario added.

“A definite big part of it is the bands that are playing,” Nova said. “There was more of a scene when Gaskill had a show going on. When there is something worth seeing on stage, people come out. People came out for Beyond the Embrace, Iron Oak, Hidden…”

“It comes in waves,” Craig said. “You’ll have it and it’ll be great. I remember when Gaskill first came out we played the United Fisherman’s Club and had about 300 kids there because there were no metal shows anywhere to be had. Over time, the numbers started to dwindle and once the New Wave opened up and they started having theirs, all those kids that had been going to those shows were old enough to get into the New Wave so they started going to those shows again.”

“I’ve been trying to set up hardcore shows in New Bedford, but venues just don’t want it,” Craig said. “No Problemo is staffed by hardcore people and skateboarders, but the last hardcore show we had ended up in an ambulance call.”

I asked Shannon what he liked most about being in a band.

“The energy and realization that your hard work and your imagination is finally coming fruition to the masses. It is a break from the daily grind of life.”

Chris Helme agreed. “The crowd. If they’re into it, it makes playing worthwhile.”

The hope is that word will get out that these shows at XS are well worth the $5 cover charge because you see more than a band play, you get a true performance!

Buttonwood Park Zoo’s “Art Gone Wild” showcases paintings by animals!

Contribution from one of Buttonwood Zoo’s Elephants!

The animals at the Buttonwood Park Zoo have been busy beavers – literally! Not sure if you have taken up any new hobbies this winter to help pass the time until spring arrives, but some of our animal residents have perfected their painting skills over the past few months. Yes, they like to stay busy too! With a little assistance from our zookeepers, our elephants, seals, bears, chickens and beavers have created some of the most unique works of art that you can imagine while spending quality time with their caretakers.

Personally, this fundraiser has been one of the most rewarding fundraisers that I have had the pleasure with which to be involved. As the Director of Society Operations for the Buttonwood Park Zoological Society, to witness their charismatic expressions on canvas has been quite endearing. It makes you realize the individual contribution each animal resident has to our Buttonwood Park Zoo!

Great job Cub Scout Pack 7!

This past Thursday (April 10) Boy Scout Troop 7 New Bedford visited City Hall for a very special reason, unbeknownst to the boys of Troop 7, they were being honored for their service and dedication to the improvement of the community. With the families of Troop 7 and members of Cub Scout Pack 7 in attendance to in support of the occasion, Council President Lopes called the City Council Meeting to order at 7:00 and the Scouts in attendance lead the pledge of allegiance. Next, a resolution was introduced by Councilor at-Large Linda Morad recognizing troop 7 for their efforts in the city. Following a unanimous agreement for adoption, Council President Lopes joined Councilor Morad on the floor, read the proclamation, and presented it to Troop 7’s Scoutmaster Cheryl Morrissette, the youth members, and leaders of Troop 7.

The proclamation thanked the troop for their efforts in organizing community blood drives, volunteering at GiftstoGive, and raising fund for the Shriners Hospitals for Children by volunteering at Haunting for Shriners. The council also acknowledged that Troop 7 works with boys not only from the south end but also all boys from the Greater New Bedford area including (but not limited to) those with disabilities, and that it is designated as a bully free safe-zone where all boys are made to feel welcome and are encouraged to express ideas and opinions and receive respect.

Morrissette accepted the award on behalf of the boys and leaders of Troop 7 with great humility, and explained that they do what they do not for acknowledgement or recognition, but to better the city and they will continue to do so. She also emphasized the importance of cooperation in the city to accomplish common goals. To read the full text of the proclamation visit www.troop7nb.org/proclamation. After the meeting, she (Morrissette) spoke to the press, and explained that being a female scoutmaster isn’t always easy, but that she has a great team of adults to help her, and that seeing the kids succeed and grow into change makers makes it all worth it and that she wouldn’t change it for anything in the world.

Boy Scout Troop 7 serves boys in the south end of New Bedford and the greater New Bedford area 11-18, Pack 7 serves boys ages 7(or going into first grade) -10.
