International Walk and Bike to School Day; Keith Middle School

International Walk and Bike to School Day, October 9th

Wednesday, October 9th is International Walk and Bike to School Day, an effort sponsored by Walk to School Day in the USA, National Center for Safe Routes to School, International Walk to School Day and MassRIDES.

Walk and Bike to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, decreasing traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools, public safety and the broader community. Safe Routes programs can establish healthy lifetime habits for students, increase children’s independence, help them arrive at school ready to learn, and teach safe pedestrian, bicyclist, and driver skills.

This year, Mass in Motion New Bedford’s “focus school” is the Keith Middle School, 225 Hathaway Blvd, New Bedford. Students and staff there will participate in a “three-wave” event, in which each grade level will walk around the school during a designated period, followed by line dancing in the gymnasium.

We are joining Mayor Mitchell and other City leaders, Principal Sykes, teachers, staff, and the 8th grade students to walk as a group around the school during their first period. There will be a few brief speeches regarding the importance of Safe Walking/Biking and physical activity throughout New Bedford as we continue to fight the childhood obesity epidemic in our City.

We will assemble at Keith Middle School at 8:00 am on Wednesday — Please come join us! Other New Bedford Public schools, including Normandin, Roosevelt, Brooks, Rodman and others will be hosting similar events on that day for their students.

If you unable to join us at Keith, please encourage your kids, friends, colleagues and families in your neighborhoods to walk to/from/during school on October 9th to join the many other schools around the world that are raising awareness of the importance of walking together to build community, healthy kids and safe streets!

Residents Invited to City Council-At-Large Candidates’ Forum at N.B. Whaling Museum

Thursday, October 10th from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Cook Memorial Theater (Whaling Museum/Frank Grace)

The Mayor’s Youth Council invites New Bedford voters, especially youth, to attend a candidates’ forum on Thursday, October 10th from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Cook Memorial Theater. The forum will include 2 events for candidates running for citywide offices as part of the AHA! Night.

The forum for City Council-At-Large Candidates will be 5:00 to 6:30 PM and the School Committee forum will follow from 6:45 to 7:45 PM.

The format for the forum will include a series of questions presented by the Youth Council involving current issues related to New Bedford and the public schools. There will also be an audience Question and Answer period for the candidates. Each participant will have the opportunity to share with voters who they are, why they are running for office, and what they hope to accomplish.

This forum will be conducted by members of the Mayor’s Youth Council. The Mayor’s Youth Council began hosting candidates’ forums in 2007 as an opportunity for youth to participate and share their voice in the election process.

The City of New Bedford Youth Council was created by the Mayor to be the eyes and ears of city youth in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and city government. The council assists city officials in the development of community projects from a youth’s perspective. The MYC in partnership with the City of New Bedford Office of Health and Human Services is a program of the YWCA of Southeastern MA. The MYC is made up youth entering 9th grade through 12th grade.

“As long as we don’t suck…” ; The Pourmen “EP” CD Review

The Pourmen playing this Saturday at the Cape Cod Brew Fest.

Noah
by Noah Griffith

I was sitting in the Pour Farm minding my own business and my friend Rick approaches me with what looks to be a piece of cardboard in hand and says “Noah you still write for New Bedford Guide? Want to do a review of the Pourmen’s new CD?” Obviously, now you know how I answered the question, but it was how he ended the query that I thought was interesting. “As long you think we don’t suck.”

So as it turned out, that piece of cardboard turned out to be 6 song CD, ‘A Little Taste of The Pourmen’.

At first listen I wasn’t sure if the CD was all of cover songs or a mix of originals with covers. Take that as you wish but I found myself smiling after every song and listening to the CD three times before having to turn it off. Only one song on the short six song album, had I ended up skipping the 3rd time that I listened to it (actually skipping it again right now as I write this). I wont tell you which one because I don’t want to influence you opinion of the song if you ever end up listening to it.

6 song CD, ‘A Little Taste of The Pourmen’

To be straight forward the album is good. Fun to listen to and the twist they put on some old classics are fun and help bring the old songs back to life.

Your chance to grab their album is coming up soon there is going to do a CD release on October 25th at The Inn on Shipyard Park. Keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming show at No Problemo too. As a side note seeing this, their band life is a blast! Friends and I were lucky enough to stumble onto a show at the old Celtic Coffee house before it closed. I’ll end it here by saying we almost brought the place down with all the sing-along that was happening.

Personal Info about the Pourmen (not written by me):
The Pourmen is a New Bedford-based five piece band that blends many Celtic, Folk and Punk Rock influences to craft heart-felt songs from the Cobblestone Streets and Salty Pubs of the Whaling City. The band was established in January 2013 and played its first shows in New Bedford on Saint Patrick’s Day, sharing the stage with their brethren, The O’Tooles (New Bedford) and The Pubcrawlers (Portland, Maine). In August 2013, The Pourmen turned to Ron Poitras at Feedback Studio and recorded their debut EP “A Little Taste of The Pourmen”. The CD is available for free listening and/or downloading at http://thepourmen.bandcamp.com. The band expects to release a full length CD by the end of 2013.

Montigny signs bill for rent control in Acushnet mobile home parks

Senator Montigny Announces Acushnet Mobile Home Rent Control Bill Signed Into Law

Senator Mark Montigny is pleased to announce that the Home Rule Petition bill providing for rent control for mobile home parks in Acushnet was signed into law by the Governor today.

The Bill was filed by Senator Montigny and Representative Koczera after it was approved by a majority of Acushnet Town Meeting members. The bill permits the Town to establish a rent control board, appointed by Selectmen, for the purpose of regulating rents, minimum standards and evictions from mobile home housing communities in Acushnet.

“Acushnet gave serious deliberation on this issue and has determined that it is in the best interest of its residents. Many of the people affected by this new law are seniors on fixed incomes and limited resources. This law will ensure that any actions taken by mobile home landlords toward them will be reviewed by a neutral body in order to ensure the residents are able to live independently in their own homes and maintain their well-being”, said Senator Montigny.
