Result of Duty Status Hearing

A duty status hearing was held this afternoon at Massachusetts State Police General Headquarters for the trooper involved in Wednesday’s apprehension of suspect RICHARD SIMONE. Following the hearing, that trooper was ordered suspended with pay for the duration of the investigation into the the arrest. Today’s hearing was not part of the investigation itself; rather, its purpose was only to determine the trooper’s duty status for the pendency of the investigation.

The trooper is assigned to the Andover Barracks. He is 32 and has been a member of the department since October 2011. His name is not being released as his suspension is an internal personnel action. No further information is being released at this time.

Murder suspect from Puerto Rico turns himself in to New Bedford police

Earlier this week, New Bedford detectives and Trooper David Reis of the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section received information from authorities in Puerto Rico that they were looking for an individual wanted for murder and gun charges. It was believed that the fugitive was staying somewhere in New Bedford.

Yesterday afternoon at approximately 1:00pm the suspect turned himself in at the downtown police station. It appears he received a call from his mother who resides in Puerto Rico urging him to turn himself in. He was arrested as a fugitive from justice and arraigned yesterday in New Bedford district court. He will be held pending rendition proceedings.

Information was developed that he was new to the area and had been residing with a female in New Bedford.

Detectives do not know the specifics of the case against him.

Christopher Gonzalez-Agosto age 25 of New Bedford.

Faces Of New Bedford – #50: Angel Diaz

Meet Angel Diaz, 28-year-old Math teacher, co-program director and DJ.

Angel moved to New Bedford in his early teenage years, after living in Florida and New York for his early childhood. His start in New Bedford wasn’t that great, getting kicked out of New Bedford High School for carrying a weapon on him to dropping out of the alternative high school. It wasn’t too long after that Angel realized he didn’t want to continue down the path of destruction he was on and went back for his GED at the age of 16. He was also avidly involved in music, working with two others to open his own professional studio, where he was recording and mixing music at the same age.

He then went on to work for a host of organizations where he helped youth, whether it was with their homework or creating lessons for them, all while continuing his secondary education. He got involved with Dream Out Loud, then Brick by Brick, and continued teaching teenagers music on and off for the past 14 years. It was in 2014, that he became the co-program director. Since then he has even worked alongside a group of teens on a project, which they performed for the President of Bermuda on the island. Angel is also a full time math teacher for the girls at the Our Sister School, which is a private charter school for low income girls.

Aside from teaching, Angel is also an entertainer. His involvement with music since such a young age has opened up the door for him to be able to work in various different platforms of music, from production to evening DJing. He has done tons of corporate events and parties but recently has teamed up with the Blessed Energy band. He will be joining them to tour New England this upcoming summer alongside a few other DJing opportunities he has.

“I’m an “edutainer,” I like to educate while entertaining. I was a person that the system failed so I didn’t want to see other kids go through that.”

Faces Of New Bedford – #49: Tiffany Ferreira

Meet Tiffany Ferreira, a Research Assistant at the University of Massachusetts as part of a Doctoral fellowship and part-time Operations Manager at Southern Lights Solar.

As long as Tiffany could remember she had been good at math and during her high school years had even considered going to college to become a math teacher. With the push of several teachers from New Bedford High School (Ms. Daamguard, Mr. Viera, and Mr. Knickerson; just to name a few) she began her freshman year as a Math major at UMass Dartmouth.

After a few semesters her interests in math had shifted and she became a physics major. During her first few years in college she didn’t really get involved but it wasn’t until the faculty in the Math and Physics department invited her to go to the Undergraduate Women’s Physics conference where she really had a life changing event. During one of the sessions, someone mentioned how only 2 percent of women in undergraduate Physics programs would continue on to receive their Doctorate, and this fact bothered her.

From that point on she made it her mission to advocate for women in the math and science world. Upon graduating from the University of Massachusetts with her Degree in Science and Physics, she was invited to join a doctoral fellowship at the school, where she is studying how to numerically model the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

She is heavily involved with Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) working to help other people see that there are plenty of opportunities to grow and work in the fields of science, physics.

They have hosted events for OUR Sister’s School for girls on several occasions, teaching them to understand science using games and presentations.

“We have the potential to be a great hub like Boston and New Bedford should look to UMass for all of the opportunities that it has, rather than seeing it as ‘The closest school to go to so it is my last option.’”

Grammy Award-winner Melissa Etheridge returns to Zeiterion Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, June 29

Grammy Award-winner Melissa Etheridge returns to Zeiterion Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, June 29, at 8 p.m. with her M.E. Solo tour. A limited run in an intimate setting, Melissa will play acoustic guitar, electric guitar, harmonica and piano will perform songs from her latest album, This is M.E. The M.E. Solo tour will feature both new tunes and classics like “Come to My Window” and “I Want to Come Over,” all intertwined with personal anecdotes. Etheridge’s many accolades include two Grammy Awards and 17 nominations, an Academy Award (“I Need to Wake Up” from the Al Gore documentary An Inconvenient Truth) and a star on the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame. Tickets from $55 to $75 are available at www.zeiterion.org, 508-994-2900 or at the Zeiterion box office, 684 Purchase Street, New Bedford.

“I haven’t been this excited about making music and creating in ages,” Etheridge says about her new album, This is M.E. She continued, “I enjoy doing a solo show, and diving into my catalogue of songs brings a new freshness to my older material. It is such an intimate experience with the audience, and it is truly one of my favorite ways to perform.” Of her solo tour, the New York Times raved, “Ms. Etheridge gave each big chorus the additional heft of her voice, still a raspy and incandescent howl.”

With this album, her 12th collection of new material, she is not alone as a songwriter. She teamed with Jerrod Bettis (Adele, One Republic), Jon Levine (Nelly Furtado, Selena Gomez), Jerry Wonda (Grammy Award-winning producer of the Fugees, Mary J. Blige) and Roccstar (Usher, Chris Brown), among others. These collaborations were a new route for the artist, and recording the new album proved an inspiring, electrifying experience for her. The powerful lyrics and incomparable voice, the indelible melodies, the blazing guitars could be from no one else. “Who Are You Waiting For” closes the album on the most intimate, emotional, personal, lump-in-the-throat note of her entire career. It’s the song she wrote for and debuted at her wedding to Linda Wallem.

This is M.E. album marks the debut of her independent label and also ushers in a very active stretch for Etheridge. In addition to her steady touring, both with her band and as a solo act, she continued her noted activism speaking to the United Nations on LGBT rights as human rights, sang her own “Uprising of Love” and John Lennon’s “Imagine” as part of this year’s New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square and performed at the opening ceremonies of the WorldPride week in Toronto.

Tickets for Melissa Etheridge’s M.E. Solo Tour on June 29 are available for purchase at www.zeiterion.org, by calling 508-994-2900, or in person at the box office at 684 Purchase Street, New Bedford, MA. Box Office Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and two hours before each performance.

Stakeholders Support Creation of New Arts, Culture, and Tourism Fund for New Bedford

Arts, cultural, and business leaders in New Bedford are voicing their support for a proposal by Mayor Jon Mitchell to attract more creativity and investment to New Bedford and draw tourists through improved cultural planning, marketing, arts programming and public art.

The proposal, first announced publicly in Mayor Mitchell’s March 24th State of the City Address, would establish an “Arts, Culture and Tourism Promotion Fund” from a portion of the proceeds of the City’s hotel and lodging tax to create a City Cultural Coordinator position and fund cultural marketing in collaboration with the Office of Tourism and Marketing, arts programming, and public art. The measure requires both approval by the City Council and passage of special state legislation, and will be taken up by the Council at Thursday’s meeting.

Mayor Jon Mitchell said, “It is a matter of economic development orthodoxy that arts and culture are critical catalysts in cities’ revitalization and growth. We’re fortunate in New Bedford that we don’t have to create an arts and culture ‘scene’ here out of whole cloth. We’re already far ahead of many cities of our size in quantity, richness, and maturity of our cultural assets, but we need additional resources and capacity to maximize their impact on the city’s growth and development.”
In recent years, New Bedford’s reputation has grown as the center for arts in the region and as a creative and inviting place for all types of artists to live and work. New Bedford was named the “Seventh Most Artistic City” by Atlantic Monthly, ranked Ninth on Matador Network’s list of Most Creative Towns, and sixth on Bustle’s Best Cities for Young Artists.

Noelle Foye, Executive Director of the New Bedford Art Museum/ArtWorks said of the proposal, “I believe that creating an Office of Arts and Culture is a significant step forward for New Bedford. Having a recognized place at the table, gives art and cultural institutions the ability to help facilitate change and support the economic development of the city.”

“A great community is often identified by its commitment to arts and culture, including public art, programming, marketing and promotion. Indeed, businesses looking to relocate often measure the value of a community, in part, by its commitment to arts and culture. As one of the most arts-friendly communities in the United States, New Bedford can further show its commitment to being a new economy city by supporting this position,” said Rick Kidder, President of the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce.

“This proposal is the next step towards furthering economic development and tourism in our downtown cultural district,” said Senate Assistant Majority Leader Mark Montigny. “Over the years I have consistently advocated for the enhancement of our invaluable cultural institutions and programming to promote increased access to educational and experiential opportunities for residents and visitors of all ages and abilities. Providing a dedicated fund will further these efforts and promote the rich cultural heritage of our city. I look forward to filing the petition in the Senate with the collaboration of the Mayor and City Council.”

“Given the documented success the City has had with programs such as AHA! Night, a reinvigorated Zeiterion Theatre, the recognition of a cultural district, the success of organizations such as WHALE, the National Whaling Park District, and hosting educational institutions such as UMass Dartmouth and BCC, we are indeed poised to step up our presence as a destination for the arts, culture and tourism,” said Adrian Tio, Dean of UMass Dartmouth’s College of Visual and Performing Arts.
