The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center Presents International Fado Star MARIZA

Mariza, whom Uncut calls “the greatest contemporary singer of fado,” has become the most successful performer in the genre since the late Amália Rodrigues. She returns for her fourth appearance at The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 22 at 8:00 p.m., in a performance that celebrates the release of her acclaimed new album, Mondo. Described by Songlines as “stunning, shimmering” and “simply breathtaking,” Mondo celebrates a more personal style for the artist and captures both the spirit of her emotional live performances and her impressive vocal range. Tickets for Mariza range from $39 to $69 and are available at www.zeiterion.org, 508-994-2900 or at the Zeiterion box office, 684 Purchase Street, New Bedford.

Born in Mozambique and raised in Portugal, Mariza’s rise to become one of the biggest names in global pop and folk came quickly in the wake of her 2001 debut, Fado em Mim, and has been defined by a desire to bring traditional music to the present, and into the global mainstream.

In the 14 years since her debut album she has travelled the world performing at some of the most prestigious venues, performing with some of the biggest names, supported by some of the most well-known orchestras while her records have gone on to sell over one million copies worldwide attracting over 30 Platinum awards.

She has released her sixth studio recording and her first of entirely new material in five years. This new album called Mundo (World) aptly describes the world that fits inside it – a world that Mariza in her voice, but also the world whose doors opened to her as she traveled around the globe through the years. Mariza’s Fado is a different. It’s an adventurous Fado that expands beyond the Portuguese borders in search of a new cosmopolitan identity.

Many of the songs featured on Mundo were written specifically for Mariza’s voice. Among the exceptions are a cover version of a 1930 tango originally sung by Carlos Gardel; one Fado made famous by Amália Rodrigues and another created by the legendary Alfredo Marceneiro; and a Cape Verdian “morna”.

She’s been essential to fado’s internationalization, performing at the world’s hallowed Halls – Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall and Massey Hall – and biggest stages – the World Cup, the Olympics, and collaborating with the likes of Gilberto Gil, Lenny Kravitz, Sting, Cesária Évora and many others, and achieved multi-platinum and chart-topping status for all of her albums.

She’s been named a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, is a winner and multiple nominee at BBC Radio 3’s Best World Music Artist, and most recently was named Best Artist of 2016 by Songlines Magazine, and one of the 20 most influential women of Portugal by Executiva Magazine.

“A lot of things have changed in my life and made me have a very different perspective. I just want to do good concerts, and not in big arenas,” she says. “I want to make my music approachable, as close as possible to the people.”

Tickets for Mariza start at $39 and are available for purchase at www.zeiterion.org, by calling 508-994-2900, or in person at the box office at 684 Purchase Street, New Bedford, MA. New Bedford Recycling Efforts Receive Recognition, Funding

New Bedford’s Recycling Rate Continues to Increase

The City of New Bedford will receive the largest Massachusetts Sustainable Materials Recovery Program (SMRP) grant in the state in recognition of its programs and policies that have dramatically increased its recycling rate and reduced the amount of waste sent to the Crapo Hill Landfill. New Bedford will receive $66,000; one of just four municipalities in Massachusetts to receive a grant award in excess of $50,000 through the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (Mass DEP) program.

Recycling FlyerNew Bedford earned the grant award by participating in the state’s “Recycling Dividends Program” (RDP) which invites cities and towns to earn payments by implementing policies and programs proven to maximize materials reuse and recycling, as well as waste reduction. Communities that earn RDP payments must reinvest the funds in their recycling programs for things such as new recycling bins or carts, public education and outreach campaigns, collection of hard-to-recycle items and the establishment of recycling programs in schools, municipal buildings and other public spaces.

New Bedford’s automated curbside collection system for trash and recyclables began in late June of 2014. In the first year of the program, the City doubled its recycling rate and reduced the amount of waste sent to the Crapo Hill Landfill by 30%. With the help of proactive education and enforcement efforts recycling citywide has continued to increase. In Fiscal Year 2016, the amount of recycling collected curbside in New Bedford increased an additional 13%, meaning 875 more tons of material was recycled and kept out of the landfill.

The City of New Bedford, under the Department of Facilities and Fleet Management, will use the state grant to further extend and support the outreach work of its Waste Reduction Enforcement Coordinator (WREC). The coordinator works in every city neighborhood to help New Bedford residents and businesses to comply with the City’s trash and recycling regulations through education and enforcement. As part of the City’s outreach efforts, the coordinator meets with residents in person and distributes informational flyers that detail which items may and may not be recycled in the carts. The coordinator often leaves a personal hand-written note with positive feedback for those residents who are doing a great job of recycling curbside.

Normandin Middle School to Add ‘PRIME Time’ Enrichment Period to School Day with $385,000 State Grant

Highlights:
– Exciting new arts, communications and STEM opportunities
– Choices and independent pathways for students
– School day will shift to 7:30 a.m. – 3:24 p.m. beginning October 3

Normandin Middle School will introduce PRIME Time, an enrichment period for all students at the end of the school day, beginning Monday, October 3, 2016.

Normandin educators voted Monday, September 19, to accept the PRIME Time schedule based on resources of a $385,000 expanded learning time grant from the state’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education that will add a PRIME Time enrichment period for project-based learning for all Normandin students.

Beginning October 3, Normandin’s school hours will shift to 7:30 a.m. to 3:24 p.m. (Currently, school begins at 7:45 a.m. and dismisses at 2:30 p.m.) All bus routes will accommodate the revised schedule.

What is PRIME Time?

PRIME Time is independent, student-selected opportunities at the end of every school day. At Normandin, PRIME Time periods will focus on:

– Project-based learning
– Readiness for college and career
– Independent pathways
– More choices for students
– Experiential opportunities

These hands-on, creative enrichment periods for students will feature more time for unified arts, and will allow for students to select their own pathways and make PRIME Time their own time.

With a 7:30 a.m. start time and 3:24 p.m. dismissal beginning October 3, all bus routes will accommodate the shifted schedule. Extracurricular activities and athletics within Normandin will also accommodate the schedule for all students involved.

“We are very excited that Normandin students will receive an independent, enrichment-based period that will engage and motivate them to learn more in areas that they would not be able to explore in a typical middle school,” said Superintendent Pia Durkin. “We are delighted that Normandin is one of just three expanded learning time grants awarded in Massachusetts. Middle school is a critically important time in students’ lives and giving them opportunities to independently select enrichment and elective courses will strengthen their learning and make them engaged as readers and writers, and as the brilliant scholars they are. We recognize the PRIME Time enrichment shift in the school schedule affects families and students, and we will work to accommodate the entire Normandin community as the schedule shifts next month.”

About Expanded Learning Time (ELT) Awards from DESE:

Normandin Middle School received $385,000 and Hayden McFadden Elementary School received $330,600. Normandin teachers ratified the proposal to apply for the grant earlier this school year.

Twelve schools statewide applied for the funding with only three receiving ELT, two of them in New Bedford. This highly competitive process at the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education received proposals from 44 applicants requesting funding for 64 sites, or $9.8 million in funding with just $3 million available.

Key attributes for applicants according to the DESE were clarity of design, plans for integration of academics into engaging, enrich activities, solid internal/external partnerships, and explicit connections between plans and grant priorities. The three-year ELT grants require reapplication each year.
