Millions of Americans fall into the category of clinically severe obesity — more than 100 pounds overweight with a body mass index greater than 40. Body mass index is a calculation of weight in relation to height.

Weight loss surgery has been endorsed by a consensus panel convened by the National Institutes of Health as the only effective means of inducing significant long-term weight loss for the vast majority of patients with morbid obesity.

The Southcoast Center for Weight Loss’s community-based program is designed to incorporate a thorough approach to weight loss surgery utilizing a team comprised of dietitians, psychologists, nurses and surgeons to provide a safe and comprehensive surgical weight loss program.

Zeiterion hosting its third annual fundraiser with a Swingin’ Sinatra Supper

The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center will transform into a swingin’ Sinatra Supper Club for its third annual fundraiser, the Center Stage Gala, on Saturday, April 8, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The glamorous evening will feature live entertainment from The Strictly Sinatra Band, dinner, dancing, open bar, silent auction, and the inaugural Paragon Award honoring first recipients Deborah and Benjamin Baker. Center Stage Gala tickets are $150 per person ($50 of each ticket is tax deductible) and benefits the non-profit Zeiterion Theatre. Tickets can be purchased by calling (508) 997-5664 x143, online, or at the Box Office at 684 Purchase Street. Space is limited, and sponsorship opportunities are available.

The biggest fundraising event in the Zeiterion’s calendar, the third installment of the Center Stage Gala will transform the theatre into The Copa Room at The Sands Hotel. The stage will triple in size to transport patrons to a time when Sinatra and his Rat Pack pals reigned supreme on the Vegas strip. The event raises critical funds that support The Z’s mission to entertain, educate, and inspire the community through the performing arts, while contributing to the cultural, social, and economic well-being of Greater New Bedford.

“The Z is a cultural cornerstone for New Bedford, and it’s important that the community have an opportunity to come together to celebrate and support it,” said Nicole Downing Merusi, Development Director, Zeiterion. “That’s what the annual gala is all about. Plus, it’s a really great party with lots of fun elements. Who doesn’t love a good excuse to get all dressed up and celebrate with friends?”

To acknowledge commitment to the Zeiterion and the community, the theatre will present the first-ever Paragon Award to Deborah and Benjamin Baker. Following the inaugural presentation, the award will henceforth be named in their honor to recognize The Bakers for dedicating their time, expertise, and resources to the Zeiterion for more than three decades.

“We are overjoyed to both name this Paragon Award for, and present it to, Deborah and Benjamin Baker,” said Rosemary Gill, Co-Executive Direction, Zeiterion. “They have been a pillar in the success of the Zeiterion. Their commitment, loyalty, and generosity embody the meaning of paragon. They are true models of excellence in our community.”

The success of the previous two Galas, which brought attendees to the opulent 1920s and exotic Havana, Cuba, has quickly established the Center Stage Gala as the “can’t-miss” event of the fundraising season. This year’s Sinatra Supper Club flashes back to the elegant yet raucous Rat Pack era, as the authentic Strictly Sinatra Band, led by Michael Dutra, will have guys and gals dancing the night away. Open bar will feature iconic cocktails, like the classic martini, and Russell Morin Catering will serve up generous hors d’oeuvres and a three-course dinner that will feature timeless favorites true to the evening’s theme.

The diverse silent auction will also be available online through BiddingForGood, a charitable e-commerce company. Patrons near and far will now be able to bid on a variety of items at various price points, including a pair of diamond earrings from Hannoush Jewelers, a Custom Martin Acoustic Guitar, and a Martha’s Vineyard getaway with Cape Air.

The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center is a non-profit organization with a mission to provide New Bedford and the region with performing arts programming of excellence that inspires, educates, engages and entertains. Tickets are available for purchase at www.zeiterion.org, by calling 508-994-2900, or in person at the box office at 684 Purchase Street, New Bedford, Mass. Zeiterion Box Office hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and two hours before each performance.

South Coast Chamber Music Series Closes with Mastery and Mystery

The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra’s South Coast Chamber Music series wraps its very popular season with Mastery and Mystery, a concert featuring two French masterpieces and a viola sonata shrouded in mystery. Faure’s ravishing Piano Quartet in C Minor and the iconic Ravel Trio hold their own against Rebecca Clarke’s wildly sensuous Viola Sonata, a work at first presumed written by Ravel under a pseudonym – because it was that good! Featuring Raluca Dumitrache, violin; Don Krishnaswami, viola; Timothy Roberts, cello; Janice Weber, piano.

Two performances are scheduled: Saturday, April 1, 4pm, St. Gabriel’s Church, 124 Front Street, Marion, and Sunday, April 2, 4pm, St. Peter’s Church, 351 Elm Street, South Dartmouth. Admission is $20 at the door.

You deserve a symphony in your life—the New Bedford Symphony! The NBSO is a professional orchestra that annually presents a concert series of classical and pops music with prize-winning guest artists from around the world, as well as a chamber music series. In addition, the NBSO’s innovative and nationally recognized educational programs reach 30,000 students each year. The NBSO is dedicated to building a community of music in the South Coast. 14 Things To Do This Weekend (Mar. 17 – Mar. 19)

Depending on your point of view this week’s predicted Blizzard-apocalypse that never materialized was either a complete weatherperson failfest, or a stroke of luck. Either way, while much of New England, including most of the Bay State got covered in a significant amount of snow. The South received about 5-6″ before switching over to rain which washed most of it away. Messy nonetheless. This weekend will be rather mild in comparison with temperatures as high as 42 degrees. Sunday we might get an inch or two of snow. Certainly nothing stopping any of us from heading out and enjoying ourselves.

Lastly, a piece of very important advice in light of recent sad news: beware of carbon monoxide when running heaters and please take precautions.

As always, click on the title for more or detailed information on the event. Most of the events were pulled from our event calendar where you can find hundreds of local area events each month. The event calendar is FREE, so if you are a local business, and not taking advantage of FREE publicity, shame on you! Are you a local business and want to sponsor this high traffic, weekend guide? Faces Of New Bedford #94: Devin Byrnes

Meet Devin Byrnes, 42-year-old cook and owner of Destination Soups.

Devin grew up in Salem, MA and always found himself cooking, from a young age and through high school in restaurants. He located to New Bedford to attend the University of Massachusetts and fell in love. He never felt that Salem was a home to him, and got that sense while in New Bedford right away.

After spending about 7 years in New Bedford, he moved to New York chasing his career as a cook. While there he met his wife and they moved back to New Bedford, with aspirations of opening his own restaurant. Throughout the years, he had specialized in making soups, so it only made sense to open a soup shop.

His goal with Destination Soups is to have a place where the average worker or college student can stop in to have an affordable and healthy lunch. He has been able to successfully do that, although his first few years were a struggle, working open to close with only one part time employee. Devin was able to push through and persevere, even moving to a bigger space and purchasing the building it is located in.

“There is something to be said for sticking around and sticking it out.”

Massachusetts State Police Investigating Theft of Scenic Viewers Stolen in Florida, MA

Optical view finder that was stolen – not the actual one.

State Police are investigating the theft of two scenic viewers which were stolen from the Route 2, Eastern Summit, in Florida, Massachusetts.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Talitha McCarthy-Johnson indicates that two commercial binocular units, which were located next to the Eastern Summit Gift Shop, were cut from their platform and taken sometime between February 27 and March 7, 2017.

The two binoculars, manufactured by Tower Optical, are constructed of bronze and cast iron and weigh approximately 305 pounds each. These binoculars are considered collectibles, given the relatively low number manufactured.

If you have any information relative to the whereabouts of these items, please contact the State Police Barracks in Cheshire at 413-743-4700.
