Multiple agencies are currently investigating the deaths of a father and his son in Acushnet. The two deaths are likely the result of carbon monoxide poisoning, and foul play is not suspected at this time.
The deceased have been identified as Joseph Lopes, 41, and Collin Lopes, 9, both of 3 Buttonwood Lane in Acushnet.
At around 8:15 a.m. today, Acushnet Police received a call from the mother of the deceased boy, who is also the ex-wife of the deceased father. The mother was worried because she had been unable to make contact with Mr. Lopes or with Collin Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.
Acushnet Police responded to 3 Buttonwood Lane to perform a well-being check. Upon arrival at the home, police found nothing out of order and Mr. Lopes’ vehicle was in the driveway. Police then called the Acushnet Middle School and were informed that Collin had not shown up for school.
Police and fire officials made entry into the home around 10:30 today, and fire officials quickly determined that there were high levels of carbon monoxide present in the home. Both victims were found deceased inside the home. Two dogs were also found inside the home. One of the dogs was deceased, the other was believed to be very ill.
The Massachusetts State Fire Marshall’s office is en route to the scene, and will assist in the investigation to determine the cause of the apparent carbon monoxide leak.
