Student jazz ensemble to play lunchtime performance at Custom House Square

student-jazz-downtown-new-bedford

The City of New Bedford will welcome the Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) student band and student jazz ensemble to Custom House Square on Friday, June 13, 2014 at noon for a lunchtime performance.

In the event of inclement weather the performance will be moved indoors to the New Bedford Whaling National Historic Park Visitors Center located at 33 William Street.

The performance by the GLCPS students will be the culmination of a year of hard work for the founding members of the school’s instrumental program. Under the direction of GLCPS music teacher and band director Ian Gollub, the 40-member band has practiced all year and performed at several events both at the school and off-campus, including a Providence Bruins game and at the School Choice Fair earlier this year. The band includes students in grades 5-12. Most recently the band attended a workshop at the Boston Conservatory where they performed for and worked with Conservatory professors.

The student jazz ensemble, whose six members participate in the school band, has also performed on several occasions, including for the Global Gala scholarship fundraiser and more recently at an event at the Rotch Jones Duff House that featured jazz groups from several area schools.

“This is not a beginning band any more. They sound like an advanced ensemble; their hard work shows,” said Gollub.

The Custom House Square performance by the student musicians on Friday is made possible in part by a STARS Residencies (Students and Teachers Working with Artists, Scientists, and Scholars) grant through the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The grant enabled the School to enlist veteran band educator Loren Palmer of Rhode Island to work with GLCPS students to improve their skills.

“We are grateful to the Mayor’s Office for the opportunity to showcase a year of hard work and incredible music making,” added Gollub.

White Spotted Bamboo Shark Hatches at Ocean Explorium

baby-shark-new-bedford-ocean-explorium

The Ocean Explorium is pleased to announce the arrival of a baby White Spotted Bamboo Shark. After approximately 100 days in the egg, this fully-formed young shark hatched Sunday morning.

Exhibit Curator Warren Gibbons, said “We are very excited. Visitors are most attracted to young animals. There was a tremendous response two and a half years ago, when our first baby sharks were born. One of the young sharks from that batch of babies is in the Ray and Shark Touch Tank today.”

The new baby shark measures about six inches in length and displays bands of contrasting color. It is one of four fertile eggs and, according to Mr. Warren, “There is significant activity within the other egg cases, indicating the babies are preparing to hatch.” He added “The young shark appears to be quite healthy. It breathes easily, moves along the bottom of its isolation tank, and is already eating.”

The egg-laying White Spotted Bamboo Shark is one of three species exhibited in the Ray and Shark Touch Tank within the Ocean Explorium; other species include the Atlantic Stingray and the Cownose Ray. Other exhibits that permit the public to interact with marine life include the Scallop Touch Tank, the Rocky Shore Touch Tank and the Coral Farm.

New Bedford Preservation Society presents Charles W. Morgan Cemetery Tour

Historic portrayals in period costumes will take place at gravesites of the Morgans and other first families of New Bedford.

On June 21, 2014, (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) tour the Oak Grove Cemetery on Parker Street in New Bedford with the New Bedford Preservation Society and visit Charles W. Morgan and his contemporaries. Historic portrayals in period costumes will take place at gravesites of the Morgans and other first families of New Bedford. Proceeds will benefit the restoration of the Captain Daniel Drayton grave at Rural Cemetery. Rain date is June 22. Admission is $18; $15 for N. B. Preservation Society members. Visit www.nbpreservationsociety.org or call the society office (508) 997-6425 for more information.

The Society presents this special “Charles W. Morgan and His Contemporaries Tour” to commemorate the Homecoming of the last-surviving whaleship, the Charles W. Morgan, to New Bedford this month. Listed this year in the National Register of Historic Places, the Oak Grove Cemetery consists of two parcels, separated by Parker Street. The older portion of the cemetery, that south of Parker Street, was established in 1843, while the northern section (where tour parking and tour ticket booth will be located) was acquired and developed between 1870 and 1896. Most of the cemetery is laid out in the then-fashionable rural cemetery style of winding lanes, although the northernmost section has a more open layout, made partly due to complaints about the cluttered nature of the rural cemetery style.

The older, southern portion of the cemetery will be featured on this tour. When you stroll through, you will note the narrow pathways, some meant for carriages while others just for foot traffic. Many of the lots were purchased for entire families, and you will see that they are set off by granite curbing. A number of these curbings would originally have had a surrounding wrought fence with an entrance gate. This was meant to keep the spirits in their place at rest so they would not wander and disturb the living. You will also notice that several graves as well as their monuments were moved here as the death dates predate the establishment of the cemetery. Many of these early stones are very plain, or perhaps it was the Quaker background of the owners that influenced their final resting place. You will notice there are many inscriptions on the stones; some are passages from the Bible. Visit the society’s website to learn more about gravestone symbolism.
