Boat Fire Engulfs Pleasure Craft in Bourne Mooring Field; Victim Airlifted After Rescue
“On Saturday, August 8, 2026, Wareham DNR and Onset Fire Rescue responded mutual aid for a vessel on fire in the area of the Monument Beach mooring field in Bourne.
Upon arrival, a 24-26 foot pleasure craft was fully engulfed in flames while tied to its mooring. Onset Fire and Wareham DNR were able to suppress the fire.
With the fire knocked down, Wareham DNR detached the vessel from its mooring and towed it to shore, where Bourne Fire/Rescue & Emergency Services secured it, prevented it from reigniting, and conducted overhaul operations.
An off-duty Wareham DNR officer was enjoying the day with his family on the nearby beach when he noticed the smoke and responded to the incident on his personal boat. When he arrived, a Good Samaritan was assisting the victim of the boat fire, who was holding on to the side of the Good Samaritan’s boat. The Good Samaritan was able to get the victim to shore, where family members of the off-duty Wareham DNR officer who work in the medical field were able to stabilize the victim until emergency medical personnel arrived.
The victim was transported via MedFlight due to the significance of his injuries.
