The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center Presents Keigwin + Company On May 13

The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center welcomes Keigwin + Company, the refreshing dance troupe known for its theatrical sensibility, wit and infusion of pop culture, on Saturday, May 13, at 8:00 p.m. Their performance, an amalgam of modern and ballet, will include an homage to Leonard Bernstein with two of his quintessential pieces. In addition, company founder and Artistic Director Larry Keigwin will offer a free community dance class called “Let’s Make a Dance” on May 13 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. RSVPs encouraged. Founded by Artistic Director Larry Keigwin, Keigwin + Company will honor what would be Bernstein’s 100th birthday with a dynamic program that showcases two of his most iconic works: “On the Waterfront” and “On the Town – Suite.” Originally commissioned by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the National Symphony Orchestra, Waterfront & Episodes combine the company’s virtuosity with Keigwin’s keen musicality.

The performance will also include audience favorite Love Songs (2006), a romantic and playful series of duets highlighting different aspects of love that unfolds to classics by Aretha Franklin, Roy Orbison, and Nina Simone. Keigwin + Company will round out their program with Portraits (2004), intimate solos that highlight Keigwin’s unique ability to showcase each dancer’s strengths and distinct personalities.

Keigwin + Companywas founded in 2003 by Artistic Director Larry Keigwin and premiered at Joyce Soho the same year. The company creates and presents Keigwin’s electrifying brand of contemporary dance that includes the acclaimed large-scale community project, Bolero, which has been commissioned in seven communities across the country, and Runaway (2008), a fashion-inspired choreographic ride, proclaimed “a thrilling coup d’theater” by James Wolcott of Vanity Fair.

Keigwin + Companycelebrated their 10th Anniversary Season in 2013, which was generously supported by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. Over the past decade, Keigwin + Companyhas presented performances throughout NYC and nationwide at venues including The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Summerdance Santa Barbara, New York City Center, The Joyce Theater, the American Dance Festival, Bates Dance Festival and many more.

The free “Let’s Make a Dance” community workshop will be held on the morning of the performance, Saturday, May 13 at 9:30 a.m. at The Zeiterion. Led the company’s Artistic Director, Larry Keigwin, participants will be guided through a choreographic process using games and improvisation. This workshop is open to dancers and non-dancers alike.
