Zeiterion leaps into autumn with 10 world-class performances in October, including Trombone Shorty, Daughtry, Paris! The Show, National Tour of Broadway’s Once, and more!

At the top of its 2019/2020 season, Zeiterion Performing Arts Center offers an impressive slate of musical performances, movies and more this October, including Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Daughtry, Paris! The Show, national tour of Broadway’s Once: The Musical, and more. The month culminates with three Halloween-themed events for affordable, festive fun. Also in October, a new roster of Creative Classroom courses begins. The Fall 2019 semester includes Ukulele (three skill levels) on October 2, Salsa (beginner and intermediate) on October 3, Move with Me for toddlers on October 8, and Guitar (two levels) on October 8.

New Bedford Symphony Orchestra presents Mozart & Mahler
Saturday, October 5, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 6, 2:30 p.m.

In what has become a tradition on opening night, the NBSO kicks things off with a Mahler symphony – this time the lyrical and delicate Fourth, featuring rising soprano Liv Redpath. On the first half, Music Director Yaniv Dinur plays and conducts from the keyboard one of Mozart’s only two piano concertos written in the minor key. The D Minor Concerto is a dramatic and tragic piece until the end – when Mozart laughs it all off.

Movie Monday: The Birdcage

The Z’s new Movie Monday series continues with The Birdcage starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. The 1996 movie follows the duo as they put up a false straight front so that their son can introduce them to his fiancée’s right-wing moralistic parents.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue

Part Jimi Hendrix, part James Brown, and all New Orleans! Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews is the bandleader and front man of Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. He has gained international acclaim for his trombone and trumpet virtuosity, songwriting, and ability to blend traditional New Orleans styles with rock, funk, soul and hip-hop. NPR hailed him as “New Orleans’ brightest new star in a generation” and Rolling Stone says it’s a “must-see act.”

Dance Barre: Kicking & Screening

The next installation of Dance Barre is a showcase of short experimental dances created specifically for the camera. The local, national and international films collected here represent a diversity of cultural backgrounds and artistic languages; and though all are concerned with the capture of the moving body within the moving frame, each does so in its own unique way – crafting worlds that range from the narrative and familiar to the abstract and alien.

Daughtry

As the frontman for the band bearing his name, Daughtry has become one of the most visible and consistent rock & roll torchbearers of the 21st century. Throughout his career he has released four albums, all of which reached the Billboard Top Ten and have combined sales over 8 million copies in the U.S. Daughtry’s self-titled debut was the best-selling album of 2007, which contained four Top Twenty hit singles including the Grammy-nominated smash “It’s Not Over.” Leave This Town also reached #1 in 2009, while 2011’s Break the Spell was certified gold. Paris! The Show

This spectacular evening captures the charm and essence of Paris in a story about romance blossoming, with songs in French and dialogue in English. The devil and his mistresses visit The Z this Halloween! The 1987 feature film follows three single women (Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer) who yearn for “Mr. Right” in a picturesque New England town. Their wishes are granted – at a cost – when a mysterious and wealthy man (Jack Nicholson) arrives. Based on John Updike’s bestseller, The Witches of Eastwick is a star-bright otherworldly delight.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

The cult classic with a twist returns! RKO Army performs a live shadowcast as the movie starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Barry Bostwick rolls on screen. Whether you’ve seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show 10 times or never before, you’re in for a real treat this Halloween. This R-rated performance encourages participation from viewers 18 years and older.
