Why does Brockton have 7 times the COVID-19 cases as Fall River and New Bedford?

Brockton has seven times the amount of positive COVID-19 cases as comparably sized cities in Massachusetts like New Bedford and Fall River and 147 more cases than Worcester, which has almost 100,000 more people.

As of Sunday, Brockton’s Board of Health reported 457 people in the city have tested positive and 2 people have died. Fall River reported 62 cases on Sunday and New Bedford reported 65 cases on Monday. New Bedford had 95,120 residents, Fall River had 89,420 residnets and Brockton had 95,672 people.

Worcester, the second largest city in Massachusetts with 184,045 residents, reported 310 positive COVID-19 cases on Saturday far from Brockton’s 457. Quincy, even closer to Boston than Brockton, reported on Sunday that it has 174 cases with a population of 94,166. That puts Brockton with nearly three times as many cases as Quincy.

The missing pieces are the testing numbers – could Brockton be testing far more people? Testing numbers are hard to come by as local hospitals and public health officials aren’t releasing those numbers. The Massachusetts Public Health does release total testing numbers for the state, but not by county, city or town – though they do list positive cases by county.

Why do you think Brockton has so many more cases than cities like New Bedford, Fall River, Quincy and Worcester? Comment below!

Brockton has 3 hospitals – Good Samaritan, Brockton, and the VA. They also had several residents of a homeless shelter infected.

  2. My Guess would be because they are doing more testing then Fall River and New Bedford. As a Fall River Resident where and who are they testing. I haven’t heard anything from our Mayor about where we can go get tested!!

  3. Its because all the illegals are not taking it serious enough .

    • Last time I checked Trump said it was an hoax

    • Could it be that people aren’t taking it seriously or fully understand the seriousness? I find when shopping at family dollar or dollar tree or price rite.. There are a lot of people who do not have a clue about physical distance and following the CDC taped line guidelines. Could it be ignorance? Demographics, language barriers? Ignorance is when people remove their gloves and just drop them on the ground with barrels just a few feet away.

  4. I believe many of the cases are from the homeless shelters. A man tested positive a week ago, that number went to 28 or 30 this week at the same shelter.

  5. Have you compared which cities have more cell phone towers?
Here in Maine, our numbers seem to coincide with where more antenna are present.

    • Eva, you are a moron. Of course there is a correlation, they put towers where people live. More people, more cases. No people, no cases. Wasn’t that easy? There is NOTHING in the electromagnetic spectrum that will infect you with a damn virus.

  6. I think Brockton has more cases because people are coming from other cities in the surrounding areas to get tested there.

    • Brockton has more cases because? Take a look at the parks and stores. I am still working so I see people together every day in bunches. It’s as bad as San Francisco and LA nobody cares

    • I agree. Not everyone in Brockton hospitals are residents of Brockton. Our 3 hospitals, the Brockton Neighborhood Health Clinic and Mainspring House as well as our many Senior Housing clusters and Nursing homes all contribute to the population of patients.

  7. 3 major Hospitals, multiple other Medical facilities, a huge number of homeless shelters and living around the city, Multiple number of children centers/clubs and a huge population of individuals who attend weekend services in large groups, social meetings and larger families making the numbers higher when passing the Virus on top of very high numbers of testing going on…. Brockton is a very socially minded City with our kids in sports, families in churches and multiple social events around the city… The love is very large in the City of Champions!!! Reach out and help your neighbor… Stay Healthy and Safe!

  8. The city is home to a large population of foreign nationals who don’t necessarily have the same access to information. Many are not proficient in English and/or social media for example. If you also look at the demographics (nationality, education, etc), you’ll probably find that it plays a role. What I see is that people are going about their business as if there was no pandemic out there.

With Brockton New Bedford and Fall River all about the same population…it’s a clear fact that the color of your skin. The social behavior of the darker community.. is a direct result of the numbers. Look at Chicago where it’s almost a 65% higher death rate in the African American community.. it’s how you live and what you are doing to ensure that you don’t get the virus. I am Caucasian 53 years old and I am a smoker.. I grew up in Brockton. If I get it I die. The choices we make.

  10. Surrounding towns have no place to get tested so they go where they can get tested. Many go to Brockton as they don’t trust Taunton or New Bedford. Plu when you have younger people out and about… they bring it home to parents and grandparents.
