Wareham Police foil bank robbery by 67-year old man

During the morning hours of Tuesday, October 11th, Wareham Police Department detectives received information from an anonymous source regarding a male who was planning a bank robbery during the day at an unspecified time and place. Wareham area banks were notified of the situation, as detectives and patrol officers diligently patrolled bank locations throughout Wareham.

At approximately 12:30 pm, detectives received further anonymous information regarding a possible suspect walking in the area of the Cranberry Plaza on Rte. 6 & 28. A male was then observed walking into the Rockland Trust Bank, and was followed inside by Detective Dean Decas.

Once inside the bank, the suspect was observed approaching a teller and handing note that instructed cash be handed over to avoid anyone being hurt. The suspect, later identified as 67-year old Robert Murphy of #2875 Cranberry Hwy. in Wareham, was quickly apprehended by Detective Decas as he waited for the teller to act on his demand note. The arrest was made without commotion and there were no injuries at the scene.

Robert Murphy has been charged with Unarmed Assault with Intent to Rob. He is currently being held at Wareham PD, pending further investigation and court procedures.
