“Since 2000, the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Dozen Distinctive Destination program has recognized cities and towns that offer an authentic visitor experience by combining dynamic downtowns, cultural diversity, attractive architecture, cultural landscapes and a strong commitment to historic preservation, sustainability and revitalization. In each community, residents have joined together and taken action to protect their town’s character.”

The announcement was made this morning at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Lead speaker Lisa Bergson, executive director of WHALE,was joined in making this announcement by New Bedford Mayor Scott Lang, executive director of the New Bedford Economic Development Counsel Matthew Morrissey, and Rebecca Williams of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  Also on hand were preservation planner Anne Louro, New Bedford Counselors Tony Cabral and Linda Morad, and Jennifer Nersesian from the National Park Service, who is the superintendent of New Bedford Whaling National Park.

New Bedford has come a long way over the last few decades, but is still an under-appreciated city.  Along with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, there are many people in New Bedford who want to help it become recognized as the great city we all know it is.

Other Massachusetts communities that have received this award include Lowell (2000), Northampton (2001), Salem (2005), Chatham (2007), and Provincetown (2010). In Rhode Island, Westerly (2002), Newport (2004), Providence (2007), and Bristol (2009) have previously been nominated as well.

New Bedford has fought hard over the past few years to improve its somewhat uneven reputation.  Just making this list is a testament to how far this city has come, and if we all do our part and vote just one time a day, we can make New Bedford #1! This is our chance to help raise New Bedford up, and in doing so, gain the respect and admiration that this city, and its citizens, deserve.
