Emergency Services worked to extinguish a petroleum truck on fire on I-95, underneath the Fairfield Avenue overpass in Norwalk, Connecticut around 5:30am this morning.

Both sides of I-95 and several local roads were closed down as Norwalk Firefighters could be seen battling the blaze for several hours. The section of highway on both sides is expected to continue to be closed through most of the weekend.

Preliminary investigations suggests that a car allegedly cut off a truck pulling a flatbed trailer just as the petroleum tankers was approaching the Fairfield Avenue overpass just past Exit 15 south. The tractor-trailer tried to avoid colliding with the car that cut it off, so swerved and hit the tanker ripping open its rear end causing the ignition of fuel contents.

Massachusetts DoT officials stated that the bridge’s structural integrity has been compromised and the bridge will need to be destroyed.
