“At around 2:00am this morning the New Bedford Police responded to reports of a stabbing on Acushnet Avenue in front of the Morna Lounge.

Upon arrival, police immediately established a perimeter closing traffic to a portion of Acushnet Avenue. One individual was found unconscious and lying in the middle of the street and at least two other individuals who sustained stab wounds were conscious and talking with paramedics and police.

Preliminary investigation suggests there was a fight between two people before one drew a knife stabbing the other multiple times. This escalated matters causing more people to beginning fighting. At least 3 individuals were transported to area hospitals, one with very serious injuries.

Approximately, 20 minutes later police were later called to St. Luke’s Hospital – where some of the injured were brought for treatment -for what some eyewitnesses called “a riot.” This is alleged to be a spillover from the earlier incident at the Morna Lounge, apparently retaliatory actions.
