U.S. Coast Guard Northeast searching for missing swimmers off of “Jaws” bridge, Massachusetts

On Sunday night around 3:00am, four people jumped off of the American Legion Bridge, called by locals the “Jaws” bridge that connects Edgartown to Oak Bluffs. The bridge, a popular attraction for locals and tourists, became famous after appearing in several scenes in “Jaws.” Those who jumped disregarded a sign warning people not to jump or dive from the bridge.

The Edgartown Fire Department, Massachusetts State Police Air Wing, U.S. Coast Guard, and emergency responders arrived to find that two of the jumpers had been rescued by bystanders, but two were missing. The rescued swimmers were transported to an area hospital for treatment.

After a 30-minute search turned up nothing, the State Police Marine Unit transported State Police divers to the island to resume the search. Assisting in the search are CG STA Woods Hole, Air Station Cape Cod, CGC Hammerhead, Edgartown Fire, Oaks Bluff Fire, Tisbury Fire, Dukes County Sheriff.
