U.S. Coast Guard recovers body in Fairhaven believed to be missing New Bedford fisherman

On Sunday, the U.S. Coast Guard discovered a body at West Island, Fairhaven believed to be that of a fisherman that went overboard somewhere between Nomans Island, which is south of Martha’s Vineyard, and New Bedford 3 weeks ago.

The missing person was on a fishing boat called the “Susan Rose” out of Point Judith and heading toward New Bedford. Around 1:30am Friday. July 1st. the crew realized that a 54-year-old crew member was not on board.

It is estimated that the U.S. Coast Guard’s search encompassed a 1,000 square nautical mile area. The search was called off the following day after it turned up nothing.

Massachusetts State Police and the state medical examiner’s officer examining the remains to confirm that it is indeed the body of the missing Susan Rose fisherman.
