A short time out of your day could save a life!

Troop 7 New Bedford will be holding A community blood drive from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday Jan 8 at the Fairfield Inn New Bedford (185 MacArthur Dr. New Bedford). All presenting donors will receive a $5 Dunkin Donuts gift card while supplies last.

Individuals who are at least 17 years of age (16 with parental permission), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts allows those who are 16 years of age to donate blood with parental consent. Please bring your Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID when you come to donate.

Walk in donors are welcome, however appointments are highly recommended, whereas donors with appointments are taken before walk in donors and a large turnout is expected. If you would like to schedule an appointment to donate, please call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit www.redcrossblood.org.

The Red Cross offers the following tips for donors both new and experienced for a positive experience:

  • Have a well balanced meal before you donate
  • Drink a lot of fluids before and after you donate
  • Make an appointment even if you are not sure when you can arrive so the Red Cross can have the appropriate staff and supplies.
  • Bring a friend to donate with you
