Police seek tips on attack and robbery of tow truck driver on Hathaway Road, New Bedford

A tow truck operator had his money and keys stolen after he was struck by an assailant’s fist and knocked to the ground early Thursday.

The operator was driving on Hathaway Road and towing a vehicle when a vehicle approached him from behind and flashed its headlights. Thinking this may be the owner of the vehicle being towed, the tow truck driver pulled over to meet the person who exited the vehicle from the passenger seat.

The man struck the driver with his fist, knocking him to the ground. The man then grabbed the driver’s pocket, stealing his money, a set of house keys and paperwork.

He described the attacker as a 6’ 2’’ black man wearing a dark hoodie and jeans with a scruffy beard. The incident happened at about 5:46 a.m.
