Celebrating the music of Edith Piaf for her 100th birthday

The legendary singer Edith Piaf was France’s ultimate diva, whose music constitutes a sacred part of French musical heritage. Her life and iconic songs are celebrated when the world-tour of “Piaf! Le Spectacle,” starring the incomparable Anne Carrere, comes to The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center on Sunday, October 25 at 2PM.

Along with four musicians (pianist, accordionist, percussionist and contrabassist), Carrere takes audiences on a journey through the streets of Montmatre during the time of “La Vie en Rose,” sharing the amazing story of the life and career of Edith Piaf through hit songs like “Je Ne Regrette Rien” and “Padam, Padam.” Tickets for “Piaf! Le Spectacle” are from $39 to $49 and available at www.zeiterion.org, 508-994-2900 or at the Zeiterion box office, 684 Purchase Street, New Bedford.

Edith Piaf, also known as “The Little Sparrow,” had one of the most distinctive singing voices in history – and vocalist Anne Carrere embodies that signature sound. This young French vocalist faithfully recreates the power and passion of Edith at her height of fame. Times Square Chronicles says,” Ms. Carrere singing is as close as you can get to Piaf. Once every few years an international star steps on the American Stage and becomes a sensation such as Charles Aznavour, Julio Iglesias and hope soon it will be Anne Carrere.”

In addition to both authentic voice and music, “Piaf! Le Spectacle” goes beyond stage décor to recreate the feeling of Paris in the 1940s. The experience is enriched with images of Edith Piaf, and the English translations of her melodic story telling. Previously unreleased, these candid shots are projected onto the background, invoking the feel of the French capital of the Edith Piaf era.

Edith Piaf became an icon of France during World War II. She was born in Paris in 1915, and rose to international stardom in the 1940s as a symbol of French passion and tenacity. Of her many ballads, “La Vie en Rose” is remembered as her signature song. Her music was often autobiographical, and her specialties were chansons and ballads particularly of love, loss and sorrow. Among her most well-known songs are “La Vie En Rose” (1946), “Hymne a L’Amour” (1949), “l’Accordéoniste” (1955). She died in France in 1963.

Tickets to “Piaf! Le Spectacle” are $39-49 and available for purchase at www.zeiterion.org, by calling 508-994-2900, or in person at the box office at 684 Purchase Street, New Bedford, MA. Box Office Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and two hours before each performance.

“Piaf! Le Spectacle” at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center is part of the 2015/16 “Stories Untold” season. From September through May, this collection of 50 theater, music, comedy and dance performances will present tales told in many ways – from nationally syndicated NPR radio storytelling hour, “The Moth,” to classic tales told through dance with The Moscow Festival Ballet’s “Cinderella” and Arlo Guthrie’s fantastically woven yarn that led to the classic song and album, “Alice’s Restaurant.”
