The Greater New Bedford unemployment rate is much higher than the rest of Massachusetts, but believe it or not there really are a lot of jobs available for qualified applicants. Sometimes the barrier to a new job can be the lack of information on available job openings.

To solve this, each week New Bedford Guide will be working with the New Directions Southcoast (also known as the Greater New Bedford Career Center) and pulling jobs from our jobs database to inform job seekers about the hottest jobs in the area.

We will define “Hot Jobs” as those jobs that need to be filled by the employer immediately. Here are the Hot Jobs from the Greater New Bedford Career Center as of February, 227th, 2014:

1. Counter Server #3725394 – The Server duties and responsibilities include but not limited to; honoring each and every customer by providing excellent customer service. The server will be responsible for education customers about specialty house coffees and menu. Must display a positive attitude at all time to ensure the return of the customer. Must be fluent in English and Portuguese preferred, High School Diploma is required and 1 year experience in the food industry (restaurant/cafe), computer skills and POS register skills are also needed. Must be reliable and dependable. Selected candidate must have a driver’s license or live within walking distance.

2. Cook #3725391 – We’re looking to add to our team! We want someone who is full of joy at 7AM and capable of flipping an egg to perfection! Are you an experienced breakfast & lunch cook? Do you know someone who you think would be a good fit!? Applicants must be able to work in a hectic kitchen & short order experience is a MUST!

3. Bus Monitors #3725407 – Looking to hire approximately 3 monitors. 15 to 25 hours per week. Hours vary Monday through Friday 6:30am to 9:00am and then 2:00pm to 4:30pm. You must be available throughout the day. First Aid & CPR certification would be helpful or employer will train. You must pass a CORI and medical exam. Experience helpful, but not necessary.

4. Bookkeeper #3725490 – Employer who is expanding their business by opening a new restaurant is looking to fill the position of a full time bookkeeper. This applicant will be responsible for providing bookkeeping services to two entities. Both entities are side by side. You MUST be an experienced bookkeeper with Quickbooks knowledge and POS knowledge. This is a family run business. You need be hardworking and dependable. Microsoft Office skills are also needed.

5. Assistant Vice President/Network Systems Manager #3725707- First Citizens Federal Credit Union is looking for a proven professional who will ensure the efficient and effective operation of all computer software/hardware, systems, and network infrastructure. Responsibilities will include planning, development, installation, configuration, maintenance, support and optimization for all network infrastructure, software and hardware, including telecommunication systems. Candidate will also oversee internal support activities and end user training initiatives to ensure users maintain consistent, reliable and efficient access to network resources.

The ideal candidate should possess a college degree in the field of computer science, network administration and/or at least five years equivalent work experience is required. Three to five years management experience required. Technical knowledge of network security, network administration, VMware, PC and platform operating systems including Netware, Active Directory, Exchange and Microsoft Office Suites.

6. Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic #3738761 – Excel Recycling, LLC is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic. This position is responsible for troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing all types of heavy equipment, trailers, and vehicles. Required travel to our other 2 locations in MA. High School Diploma or GED Experience diagnosing and repairing heavy equipment (wheeled and tracked) and trucks, Good understanding of DOT Regulations, Good organizational and record keeping skills, Proficient in the use of diagnostic and testing equipment, Strong welding and fabrication skills.

7. Booking & Intake Assistant #3738713 – General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities include by are not limited to: Performs a variety of clerical duties related to booking and releasing inmates. Ensures that all required data such as fingerprints, mittimus, photos, tattoos, emergency contacts, etc. are accurate and part of the inmates institutional record for the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office.

8. Medical Assistant #3738785 – Show patients to rooms, take vitals, review medications and patient history, prepare patients for stress tests, EKG’s, and holter monitors. Perform injections. Assist front desk area as needed 1 year + High School diploma and Medical Assistant Certification EMR, and Microsoft Office Certification as a Medical Assistant is required. At least one year of medical office experience is required.

9. Medical Secretary #3738780 – Medical Secretary needed to support the Walk-In Center and a primary care physician. Job duties include: check in, answering phones, and checking insurance eligibility and referrals. High Diploma or equivalent Required EMR, Athena and Microsoft Office. One year experience working in a medical office setting. Experience using Athena or other electronic medical records software is required. Must be familiar with check-in, check-out duties and working as a medical secretary. Must be able to use computers and work in a fast paced environment.
