At 4 p.m., the East Providence Police Department advised they signaled a gold Mercedes to stop on Route 195 eastbound, but the vehicle failed to stop. The East Providence Police Department contacted the Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Dartmouth, advising they were not pursuing the vehicle, but it continued eastbound into Mass. The Mercedes approached a traffic backup between exit 1 and exit 2 in Rehobeth. The backup, caused by 2 separate crashes, brought the traffic to a stop. Witnesses stated the Mercedes began backing up on the highway, then attempted to cross the highway median and became stuck in the snow.

Two male occupants fled from the vehicle, crossing the westbound travel lanes of Route 495 in Rehobeth. Troopers from the State Police Barracks in Dartmouth, the Air Wing Unit, and 2 K-9s responded to the location and began a search for the suspects. The search continued until 7:35 p.m. and was terminated without locating the suspects. The investigation into the identity of the suspects is ongoing. The Mercedes, Mass registration JF4478, was towed from the scene.

The first crash involved a 2014 Toyota, operated by 30-year-old Amanda E. Santos of Warwick, and a 2012 Nissan, operated by Cliff Reis of Bristol RI. Santos was transported by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital for minor injuries.

The second crash involved a 2001 Toyota, operated by 28-year-old Richard R. Peel of Providence RI, and a 2000 Volvo, operated by 19-year-old Mark J. Devol of Bristol RI. Peel was also transported by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital for minor injuries.
