State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Martha’s Vineyard

This morning at approximately 7:54 a.m., troopers from the State Police Barracks in Oak Bluffs responded to reports of a serious crash on Middle Road near Tea Road in the town of Chilmark.

Upon arrival, Trooper Robert Branca discovered that a 1994 Chevrolet K1500 Utility, driven by Jake S. Baird, 17, of Oak Bluffs, was traveling on Middle Road when for reasons still under investigation, lost control and exited the roadway.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that Mr. Baird was operating the vehicle on Middle Road when the vehicle came into a curve, the vehicle traveled to the left side of the roadway, back to the right side, where it left the roadway, striking a tree and then down an embankment, coming to rest.

Mr. Baird was determined to be deceased at the scene, as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Two passengers in the vehicle sustained minor injuries and were transported to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

The remaining facts and circumstances of the crash are currently under investigation by troopers from the Oak Bluffs Barracks. Troop D Headquarters, State Police Crime Scene Services Section (CSSS), State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section (CARS), Chilmark Police, West Tisbury Police, Chilmark Fire Department, and Tri-Town Ambulance all assisted on scene.
