State Police Investigate Fatal Crash in New Bedford

On the morning of Oct 13, at about 8:50 a.m., State Police from the Dartmouth Barracks responded to a single vehicle rollover crash on Route 140 South by the Phillips Road and Church Street exit in New Bedford.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Stephen Fortin indicates that a 2010 Honda CRV exited Route 140 southbound onto the Phillips Road/Church Street ramp when the operator lost control of the vehicle, drove over the grass at the end of the ramp, and crossed over Phillips Road. The vehicle continued over the on ramp to Route 140 southbound before coming to rest. The operator and sole occupant, Lazaro S. Rosa, 66, of New Bedford, was determined to be deceased at the scene.

The cause of this crash remains under investigation by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Rosa may have suffered a medical incident prior to the crash.

The ramp to Route 140 southbound at Exit 5 was closed for approximately 2 ½ hours to accommodate the crash investigation. State Police were assisted on scene by New Bedford Fire and E
