What were Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Charles Sumner’s thoughts and feelings about slavery and abolitionism? What was their relationship to each other? “Tender Heart and Brave” dramatic reading explores these issues on Saturday, March 1, at 1:00 PM at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. The Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site has collaborated with Boston African American National Historic Site to create this program. This event portrays the close personal relationship of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Charles Sumner.

Tracing their relationship using their own words – through their letters, journal entries, speeches, and poetry – this program also follows the ongoing conflicts in the United States over slavery and the personal struggles these two men had in finding their roles. “The Tender Heart and Brave” takes place at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park’s visitor center, 33 William Street, downtown New Bedford. As always, admission is free.
