City officials joined with representatives of Siemens Industries to celebrate the official opening of the company’s new downtown office on Thursday, October 8, 2015. The Siemens office is located at ground level in the Bank of America Building at 700 Pleasant Street.

New Bedford has partnered with Siemens Energy Management Division to develop a program that will reduce energy consumption by upgrading systems in many of the more than 100 City-owned buildings. The energy management project is one of the largest municipal performance contracting initiatives in the Northeast.

In all, approximately $40 million in energy efficiency retrofits to the city’s municipal buildings are planned over the next five years. Under an initial phase completed earlier this year, the city’s 10,000 streetlights were upgraded to energy efficient LEDs. Within the next month, the replacement of lighting, heating, cooling systems and the installation of energy management controls and other energy conservation measures will begin at 19 facilities including nine public schools. The building improvements were developed by the Mitchell Administration at the direction of the Mayor, in conjunction with Siemens and were recently approved by the City Council.

Siemens regularly partners with communities around education and workforce development. City officials and Siemens have already begun discussions about opportunities for collaboration in this area to support the ongoing turnaround of New Bedford High School and the district.
