Scambag Alert: Phone calls to SouthCoast residents threatening to shut off your electricity

There has been a spike in reports about phone scammers calling locals and threatening to cut off their electricity if they don’t pay right away.

The caller declares that they are from “National Grid Electricity” and if you don’t make a digital payment within the next 30 minutes they will disconnect you from the power grid. They demand that you pay using Cash App or a similar phone app. The number will even utilize a 508 area code lending credence and credibility to the scam.

These sort of scams have success because they prey on those who are scared to be without electricity especially as colder temperatures approach. Sadly, it is the elderly who end up being scammed the most.

Eversource will never threaten to shut your power off within 30 minutes and always give warning weeks ahead of utilizing such drastic measures.

Please spread the word, especially to your elderly family members and friends.
