Adults may feel a historic house museum is not the best place to visit with children, but The Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum (RJD) says otherwise. On Saturday, December 1, from 12pm to 3pm, they host Family Day, a program including a make-and-take seasonal craft, a scavenger hunt in the museum, and hot chocolate and cookies.

In addition to making ornaments out of felt at the craft table, children accompanied by their adult friends can view the Christmas decorations throughout the house. A new exhibition of holiday trees and wreaths, decorated by members of the community, are on display and also for sale. Visitors are invited to vote on their favorite tree or wreath in the display.

Families who can’t make Family Day may instead enjoy one of the other family-friendly events at the museum this season:

November 30 & December 7, between 4pm and 6pm, are “Fruitcake Fridays”. Visitors can taste a bit of holiday cake, plus contribute to the “Fruitcake Folio” that the museum is collecting with recipes.

All programs are free with admission to the museum.

The Rotch-Jones-Duff (RJD) House & Garden Museum was built in 1834 for whaling merchant William Rotch Jr. This Greek Revival mansion, located on a full city block of formal gardens, is a National Historic Landmark, one of only 2,500 currently so named in the Nation. The period rooms of the house chronicle 150 years of economic and social evolution of the city, as reflected in the residencies of the Rotch, Jones, and Duff families. The Museum is located at 396 County Street. It is open Monday through Saturday 10pm to 4pm and Sunday from noon to 4pm. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for AAA members, seniors and students, and $3 for children 12 and under.
