Downtown Living at The Regency

We are all aware of the enhancements that have been made to New Bedford over the last  few years.  Whether you’ve  noticed or not, The Regency Apartments on 800 Pleasant Street has been going through some enhancements of their own.  As the city grows and improves, so must the buildings in the area, especially the living residences.  The old, run-down, eyesore that the Regency once was is now a fast-fading memory.  The new Regency is one of the premier living locations in the city, one that mirrors the 5-star living options found in much larger cities.  The best part?  There are still rooms available.

The Regency is the newest, most modern apartment complex in New Bedford.  This sixteen-story building has recently completed a $35 million renovation project, and the results are nothing short of breathtaking.  After coming under new ownership several years ago, the building was in desperate need of a makeover.   Luckily, for the people working, living, and visiting downtown New Bedford, that is no longer the case.

An apartment inside the Regency.

You enter through a large, open lobby.  From there you can easily access the elevators, as well as to a 24-hour concierge service. Everything about The Regency has been renovated and improved.  Each and every apartment has brand new windows, floors, outlets, fixtures, and appliances, which is noticeable as you walk out of the elevator on any given floor. Each individual apartment door has a light illuminating the door frame, welcoming you home.

Crossing the threshold into one of apartments, two aspects of the renovation become immediately apparent. This first is how absolutely fresh every detail of the interior is.  Brand new carpet covers the floor, and each wall is freshly painted. Ovular ceiling lights provide a perfect compliment to the second aspect, the natural sunlight. There are so many windows and so much sunlight streaming through that the electric lights seem superfluous.

The natural light is magnified by the fact that the kitchen has visible access to a spacious living room.  The bedrooms have ample closet space, and you’ll find more of the aforementioned windows in each room.  When examining the fixtures, vanities, and showers in the bathrooms, it is clear that quality was the goal.  In addition, every floor has a laundry room, as well as a chute for disposing of garbage.

Without a doubt, all the improvements make each and every apartment at The Regency great, but the farther up in the building you go, the better the apartments become. The apartments on the 15th and 16th floors have additional touches, such as bamboo floors, granite countertops, high-end appliances, in-house washers and dryers, and yes, even convex shower curtains in the bathrooms.   A select few even have outdoor patios that are large enough to hold a Super Bowl party, if you so desire. And when it comes time for New Year’s or Fourth of July fireworks, you will not find a better view anywhere in the city.

Due to the difference in the types of apartments available, the prices differ as you go along as well.  Apartments at the Regency start at $900/month and go all the way up to $1,995/month for the top-floor, penthouse suites.  These prices include heat and water.  Leases are available for either 12 or 18-months, and the security deposit on all apartments is only $500, which is obviously a huge bonus to people looking to move in soon.  Currently they are running a special that gives you a month rent-free.  The best part of this deal is that you can choose to take your free month all at once, or decide to spread it out over the course of your lease, thus reducing your monthly rent. This special won’t last forever, so if you do plan on moving in, the sooner the better.

The Regency.

Residents of the Regency enjoy a number of perks.  On the first floor there is an exercise room, which includes treadmills and elliptical machines. There is also a media room with several comfortable chairs, as well as a lounge with a full size pool table. For a small monthly fee, residents can rent storage areas of varying sizes within the building. Parking is private but plentiful, including spaces in an indoor, underground parking garage. Once in your car, it is a two-minute drive to get to the highway. If you choose to forgo your vehicle, downtown New Bedford, and all it has to offer, is a five minute walk away.

One of the greatest reasons to live in the Regency has nothing to do with the renovation.  The view from this building is absolutely stunning.  The two main faces of the rectangular building face north and south. The tall churches of New Bedford’s north end can be seen from the northern side, which also provides a great view of the harbor to the east. The urban vista from the south-facing apartments is particularly impressive, amplified by the fact that the Regency is one of the tallest buildings in the city.  This allows for a unique bird’s-eye perspective of a bustling Purchase Street, from Bank of America straight down past the Zeiterion and beyond, that can’t be enjoyed anywhere else in the city. It paints a portrait of a city on an upward trajectory, which is clearly reflected by the quality of New Bedford’s Regency.
