Police are investigating after a man brandishing a knife attempted to rob Wessam Variety, 1851 Acushnet Ave., Thursday night.

A clerk told police that a man entered the store showing a knife at about 8:59 p.m. and demanded the money in the register. The man grabbed the register and tried to take it. He then ran out of the store without the register.

The clerk chased the suspect down Shaw Street but lost sight of him as he headed south onto Conduit Street. An older model grey Honda may have been involved in the robbery attempt.

New Bedford police are reviewing videotape and interviewing witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to call the police department at 508-991-6350 or the anonymous tip line at 508-992-7463 or e-mail tip@newbedfordpd.com.

From the owners:

“At Wessam variety store on Thursday a man wearing a ski mask attacked the store with a dagger (long knife for fighting). He demanded all the money and threatened to kill us if we did not. He used foul language and asks for a fight. The owner denied him and said we will not give you a dime.
The man grabbed the register, but it was too heavy for him to take it. While he tried to take the register the owner attacked the bandit (with his private weapon). The man tried to fight with his knife but then ran when he saw the stick and the owner chased him down the street. The suspect jumped in a car and got away.”
